The process is designed from a knowledge of physical concentrations, whereas aqueous effluent treatment systems are designed from a knowledge of BOD and COD. Thus we need to somehow establish the relationship between BOD, COD, and the concentration of waste streams leaving the process. Without measurements, relationships can only be established approximately. The relationship between BOD and COD is not easy to establish, since different materials will oxidize at different rates. To compound the problem, many wastes contain complex mixtures of oxidizable materials, perhaps together with chemicals that inhibit the oxidation reactions. [Pg.309]

If the composition of the waste stream is known, then the theoretical oxygen demand can be calculated from the appropriate stoichiometric equations. As a first level of approximation, we can assume that this theoretical oxygen demand would be equal to the COD. Then, experience with domestic sewage indicates that the average ratio of COD to BOD will be on the order 1.5 to 2. The following example will help to clarify these relationships. [Pg.309]

Facile reaction of a carbon nucleophile with an olefinic bond of COD is the first example of carbon-carbon bond formation by means of Pd. COD forms a stable complex with PdCl2. When this complex 192 is treated with malonate or acetoacetate in ether under heterogeneous conditions at room temperature in the presence of Na2C03, a facile carbopalladation takes place to give the new complex 193, formed by the introduction of malonate to COD. The complex has TT-olefin and cr-Pd bonds. By the treatment of the new complex 193 with a base, the malonate carbanion attacks the cr-Pd—C bond, affording the bicy-clo[6.1,0]-nonane 194. The complex also reacts with another molecule of malonate which attacks the rr-olefin bond to give the bicyclo[3.3.0]octane 195 by a transannulation reaction[l2.191]. The formation of 194 involves the novel cyclopropanation reaction of alkenes by nucleophilic attack of two carbanions. [Pg.47]

The carbonylation of COD PdCl2 complex in aqueous sodium acetate produces /rui7x-2-hydroxy-5-cyclooctenecarboxylic acid /i-lactone (240). The lactone is obtained in 79% yield directly by the carbonylation of the COD complex in aqueous sodium acetate solution[220]. /i-Propiolactone (241) is obtained in 72% yield by the reaction of the PdCC complex of ethylene with CO and water in MeCN at —20 " C. /3-Propiolactone synthesis can be carried out with a catalytic amount of PdCC and a stoichiometric amount of CuCl2[221]. [Pg.53]

Pd-cataly2ed reactions of butadiene are different from those catalyzed by other transition metal complexes. Unlike Ni(0) catalysts, neither the well known cyclodimerization nor cyclotrimerization to form COD or CDT[1,2] takes place with Pd(0) catalysts. Pd(0) complexes catalyze two important reactions of conjugated dienes[3,4]. The first type is linear dimerization. The most characteristic and useful reaction of butadiene catalyzed by Pd(0) is dimerization with incorporation of nucleophiles. The bis-rr-allylpalladium complex 3 is believed to be an intermediate of 1,3,7-octatriene (7j and telomers 5 and 6[5,6]. The complex 3 is the resonance form of 2,5-divinylpalladacyclopentane (1) and pallada-3,7-cyclononadiene (2) formed by the oxidative cyclization of butadiene. The second reaction characteristic of Pd is the co-cyclization of butadiene with C = 0 bonds of aldehydes[7-9] and CO jlO] and C = N bonds of Schiff bases[ll] and isocyanate[12] to form the six-membered heterocyclic compounds 9 with two vinyl groups. The cyclization is explained by the insertion of these unsaturated bonds into the complex 1 to generate 8 and its reductive elimination to give 9. [Pg.423]

Keto esters are obtained by the carbonylation of alkadienes via insertion of the aikene into an acylpalladium intermediate. The five-membered ring keto ester 22 is formed from l,5-hexadiene[24]. Carbonylation of 1,5-COD in alcohols affords the mono- and diesters 23 and 24[25], On the other hand, bicy-clo[3.3.1]-2-nonen-9-one (25) is formed in 40% yield in THF[26], 1,5-Diphenyl-3-oxopentane (26) and 1,5-diphenylpent-l-en-3-one (27) are obtained by the carbonylation of styrene. A cationic Pd-diphosphine complex is used as the catalyst[27]. [Pg.515]
