At Cape Cod, USA, a study was carried out by Rudel et al. [18] to investigate the impact of septic systems as a source of APEOs and their degradation products to ground water. In this study NP was detected in all sewage samples at concentrations above 1000 pg L 1. In ground water downgradient of an infiltration bed for secondary treated effluent, NP and OP and ethoxylates were present at about 30 pg L NPEiC and NP/0P(E0)4 were detected in some drinking water wells at concentrations up to 33 pg L-1. 

Concentrations of PCB52, PCB 105 and PCB 153 form homes on Cape Cod (USA) were given by Rudel et al. (2003). Median values were below the detection limit, the maximum levels were 15.7 (PCB52), 16.5 (PCB105) and 35.3 (PCB153)...

Oxidation of As(III) has also been observed in groundwater. Arsenite was injected into oxic [200-300 pM (micromoles per liter) O2] and suboxic (1-6 pM O2) zones of groundwater at a site on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA. Significant oxidation of As(III) to As(V) along a 2.2 meter flow path was observed in both the oxic and suboxic zones (Kent et al., 2001). Manganese oxides are present in the mixutre of oxides that coat these aquifer solids (Fuller et al., 1996) and are the most likely electron acceptor in both the low O2 suboxic zone and possibly the oxic zone.

Rich was considered an authority on the design of hydro-electric power plants, and overall hydraulic engineering. Over a career of almost sixty years he was in charge of design of major installations in the eastern USA. He was credited for designing such notable works as the Conowingo Hydropower Project, the Fort Peck Project, the Cape Cod Ship Canal, the Marimbondo Hydroelectric Project in Brazil, or the St. Lawrence Power Project. He was known for a number of textbooks and papers. These include Hydraulic transients, and a chapter in the Handbook of applied hydraulics, edited by Calvin Victor Davis (1877-1946). He was an expert of water hammer phenomena and related hydraulic transients.
