Coatings commercial applications

The first commercial applications of polypyromellitimides were as wire enamels, as insulating varnishes and for coating glass-cloth (Pyre.ML, Du Pont). In film form (Kapton) many of the outstanding properties of the polymer may be more fully utilised. These include excellent electrical properties, solvent resistance, flame resistance, outstanding abrasion resistance and exceptional heat resistance. After 1000 hours exposure to air at 300°C the polymer retained 90% of its tensile strength. [Pg.518]

Sprayed, vacuum-deposited and plated coatings can be applied to most metals and to many non-metals, e.g. vacuum deposition is applied to many substrates including plastics spray application can be used for coating fabric, plastic and paper. Hot dipping and other diffusion processes are dependent on the nature of the substrate for the properties of the coating. Most commercial applications of aluminium coatings are on iron and steel with smaller quantities applied to aluminium alloys and plastics. [Pg.465]

Photo/Thermal Reactions. The fifth basic class of photopolymer chemistry that can be used in commercial applications is based more on physical changes in a polymer-based matrix than on chemical reactions. A recent application of this technology is the laser ablation (77) of an organic coating on a flat support to directly produce a printing plate. The availability of newer high energy lasers will allow more applications to be based on the photo/thermal mechanism. [Pg.5]

Isocyanates that are produced fi om aliphatic amines are utilized in a limited range of polyurethane products, mainly in weatherable coatings and specialty applications where the yellowing and photodegradation of the aromatic polyurethanes are undesirable [5]. The aliphatic isocyanates are not used more widely in the industry due to the remarkably slow reaction kinetics of aliphatic isocyanates compared to their aromatic counterparts [6]. Due to the slow reactivity of aliphatic isocyanates, it is not practical to use them in the preparation of flexible or rigid foams, which are the main commercial applications for polyurethane chemistry. [Pg.317]

The first commercial application was the coating of a fully assembled electric motor. The motor is assembled from parts of different sizes and thickness. Conventional powder coating flows and cures easily on thin and small parts, but the heavier parts may not ever reach the required melting temperature or cure completely even after extended periods of time. This technology is readily applicable to other products, such as wooden furniture with metal hardware. [Pg.170]

In addition to providing the properties of polyurethane chemistry, the authors reported that HNIPUs also exhibit the chemical resistance of epoxy binders. Potential uses of HNIPUs include commercial application in paints, varnishes, adhesives, caulking compounds, flooring/industrial coatings, foams, and composite materials. [Pg.127]

EVA copolymer waxes find use in a wide variety of commercial applications and are of particular interest in the manufacture of coatings or films capable of adhering to various substrates. [Pg.201]
