Eutrophication coastal ecosystems

As eutrophication proceeds in response to nutrient enrichment and depending upon water residence time in coastal ecosystems there may be a shift in autotrophic dominance from rooted macrophytes to perennial macroalgae to ephemeral macroalgae and finally to phytoplankton (McGlathery et al., 2004 Valiela et al., 1997) and... [Pg.891]

Nr is responsible for eutrophication, hypoxia, loss of biodiversity, and habitat degradation in coastal ecosystems. Nr is now considered the biggest pollution problem in coastal waters (e.g., Howarth et al., 2000 NRC, 2000 Rabalais, 2002). [Pg.4437]

Here we present one example to illustrate the utility of 15N for providing information about the source of dissolved organic nitrogen in a freshwater ecosystem. The 15N contents of fulvic acid fractions of different size varied slightly and were similar to the value for the 15N content of the synfulvic acid fraction in a eutrophic coastal pond in Antarctica (Table I) (Brown et al., 2002). Continuous production of mucilage by the chlorophyte population in the pond and diffusion of DOM from the sediments are the two main DOM sources these data suggest that the same source predominates for all of these fulvic acid fractions. [Pg.78]

A decade later, the Black Sea ecosystem continues to be threatened by different chemical pollutants, mainly by nutrients that enter the Black Sea through rivers from land based sources. The Danube River accounts for about a half of the nutrient input to the Black Sea. As a result eutrophication occurs over wide areas of the Black Sea, in particular, in its northwestern part. Inputs of microbiological contaminants with insufficiently treated sewage result in a potential threat to public health as tourism continues to develop in the coastal zone. Satellite SAR imagery and related statistics of oil spills show... [Pg.450]

The theoretical models considering the influence of (algal) viruses on the carbon cycle that exist to date are steady-state models assuming a fixed percentage of the algal population dying due to viral lysis. A bloom of Phaeocystis in, for example, temperate eutrophic coastal waters is, however, clearly not a steady-state situation. Based on the ecosystem model by Ruardij et al. (2005), we established a carbon budget for the main players... [Pg.212]
