Coastal development

This project was undertaken to identify petroleum hydrocarbon contcunination resulting from coastal development activities in the Charlotte Harbor estuarine system located on the Southwest Florida coast (Figure 1). The overall goal was to assess present petroleum contamination emd to provide baseline data to prove the extent and duration of additional impact from future coastal development and oil spills.

Characterization of petroleum contamination from certain land use activities and frcxn biogenic sources has provided information for assessing impact from continued coastal development activities and to assess the duration and extent of impact in the event of a major oil spill in the areas studied. However, time series samples are needed to establish rates of hydrocarbon input and degradation. 

However, the bigger threats to these intertidal systems almost certainly come from our apparently endless appetite for destroying them to reclaim agricultural land or for coastal development . Faced with the inevitability of sea level rise it is to be hoped that this trend will now reverse and allow us to celebrate and encourage these beautiful and complex environments. 

In Southeast Asia, seagrasses are under threat from loss of mangroves, which act as a filter for sediment from land, coastal development, urban expansion and bucket dredging for tin. Other impacts include substrate disturbance, industrial and agricultural runoff, industrial wastes and sewage discharges. 

Moreover, the direction of current directs between 25° and 90° no matter if it is under high tide or low tide, as shown in Fig. 34.8(c). This is a dramatic difference before and after the construction of west breakwater. Based on the long-term data analysis, it is clearly shown that the coastal development activity will change the flow field and even cause the change of ocean characteristics. This change will further affect the ocean environment and ecology. More attention should be paid on this issue. 

Coastal development in the Dominican Republic has followed a similar trend as local residents have been removed from their traditional fishing communities (Juanillo) to make way for mass tourism developments such as Cap Cana. Workers residing in shantytowns, typically with little to no government services.
