Coal gasification advantage

Methanol, a clean burning fuel relative to conventional industrial fuels other than natural gas, can be used advantageously in stationary turbines and boilers because of its low flame luminosity and combustion temperature. Low NO emissions and virtually no sulfur or particulate emissions have been observed (83). Methanol is also considered for dual fuel (methanol plus oil or natural gas) combustion power boilers (84) as well as to fuel gas turbines in combined methanol / electric power production plants using coal gasification (85) (see Power generation). [Pg.88]

One advantage of modem coal gasification combined cycle systems is excellent environmental performance. Not only are regulatory standards met, but emissions and effluents are well below accepted levels (13,16,28). [Pg.274]

A minor route, which now accounts for 2% of phenol, takes advantage of the usual surplus of toluene from petroleum refining. Oxidation with a number of reagents gives benzoic acid. Further oxidation to p-hydroxybenzoic acid and decarboxylation yields phenol. Here phenol competes with benzene manufacture, also made from toluene when the surplus is large. A similar opportunity exists for the public utility industry in the potential of LBG and MBG. The reduced environmental impact of a coal gasification plant which produces a perfectly clean fuel equivalent to natural gas, compared to direct combustion of coal may allow increased use of coal in areas where increased pollutant emission is barred. As these PSD areas increase in number, the advantages of coal gasification become more apparent. We have made cost analysis for the solar methanol production for the system of Fig. 1. In this analysis, SCOT-solar farm (Solar Concentration Off-Tower central receiver beam-down configuration) is used for solar concentrating system(Fig.2). This solar concentrating system has an economical advantage, since the heavy chemical plant can be installed on the ground. Since the high temperature of 1000-1200°C is obtained by the SCOT-solar farm, chemical plant (or reactor) for solar-assisted coal gasification can be operated.
