Note Some of Grahame s values for and included in this table. For a common cation, the sequence of anions in order of increasing adsorption is similar to that of the Hofmeister series in coagulation studies, and it is evident that specific adsorption properties are involved. 

The presence of polymers or polyelectrolytes have important effects on the Van der Waal interaction and on the electrostatic interaction. Bacterial adhesion, as discussed in Chapter 7.9 may be interpreted in terms of DLVO theory. Since the interaction in bacterial adhesion occurs at larger distances, this interaction may be looked at as occurring in the secondary minimum of the net interaction energy (Fig. 7.4). Particle Size. The DLVO theory predicts an increase of the total interaction energy with an increase in particle size. This effect cannot be verified in coagulation studies.

Patients must be carefully screened and selected for treatment. Because hypothermia may potentiate bleeding disorders, coagulopathic patients should be excluded from this treatment. Routine coagulation studies are done before the body temperature is lowered. Patients with cryoglobulinopathies are also excluded, as hypothermia increases the risk for sickling of the cells. Mild hypothermia should be used cautiously in patients at high risk for infection.

The exact nature of the polymeric spedes in solutions of aluminium salts at the pH conditions for charge reversal is not known with certainty. The development of an acute retinal artery obstruction in a young, otherwise healthy man was associated with excessive use of an oxymetazoline nasal spray. Platelet coagulation studies indicated a platelet aggregation hypersensitivity to adenosine diphosphate and adrenaline. Predisposition to sympathomimetic drug-induced platelet fibrin embolus formation may have played a role in this case (2).

Sodium citrate solution, at a concentration of 34 to 38 g/L in a ratio of 1 part to 9 parts of blood, is widely used for coagulation studies because the effect is easily reversible by addition of Ca. Because citrate chelates calcium, it is unsuitable as an anticoagulant for specimens for measurement of this element. It also inhibits aminotransferases and alkaline phosphatase but stimulates acid phosphatase when phenylphosphate is used as a substrate. Because citrate complexes molybdate, it decreases the color yield in phosphate measurements that involve molybdate ions and produces low results.

Women with sickle cell disease are predisposed to occlusion of the microvasculature (because of abnormal, inflexible red blood cells). Studies of women with sickle cell disease have shown no significant differences between OC users and non-users with regard to coagulation studies, blood viscosity measurements, or incidence or severity of painful sickle cell crisis.
