Electi ocyclic reactions are examples of cases where ic-electiDn bonds transform to sigma ones [32,49,55]. A prototype is the cyclization of butadiene to cyclobutene (Fig. 8, lower panel). In this four electron system, phase inversion occurs if no new nodes are fomred along the reaction coordinate. Therefore, when the ring closure is disrotatory, the system is Hiickel type, and the reaction a phase-inverting one. A difficulty in using the method is that of identifying the ptoint F, where capillary condensation commences. This is usually taken as the lower closure point of the loop but as was pointed out in Section 3.5, capillary condensation can occur without hysteresis if the pores are of an appropriate shape—such as wedge-like—before the irreversible condensation responsible for the hysteresis loop sets in. In the absence of an electric field, the dome-closed conformation must be the most stable tip structure, even when spot-welds are considered, since only the perfectly dome-closed tip has no dangling bonds (i.e., it is a true hemifullerene). At the 3000°C temperature of the arc, the rate of tip annealing should be so fast that it is sure to find its most stable structure (i.e., to close as a dome). Clear evidence of this facile closure is the fact that virtually all nanotubes found in the arc deposit are dome-closed.
