Closed ends

Sublimation. This is a most useful process for small-scale work as the losses are comparatively small. This can be performed (a) In a long narrow tube sealed at one end. Proceed as follows for both solid and liquid compounds. By means of a test-tube holder, hold the tube in a horizontal position, and by means of a small flame gently heat the mixture at the open end. If preferred, suitable ignition tubes may be prepared by the student from soft glass tubing it is important that the thickness of the glass at the closed end be tmiform, otherwise the tube is likely to crack when heated. Base Metal Finishes. The low cost of base metal finishes obviates selective coating. Electro deposition is used for 0.5—5 p.m thick coatings of tin and tin—lead alloy, usually about 50 wt % Sn, 50 wt % Pb, on electronic connector contacts, on contacts at the edges of printed circuit boards, and on terminals. Sheet copper alloys that have been coated with tin—lead alloy are widely used for contacts that are stamped and then formed into the desired shapes, such as pins having a closed end and sockets. Aluminum connectors that have utility—industrial appHcations are more thickly coated, and hot-dipping in molten tin is common. 

Closed U tubes (Fig. 10-10) using mercuiy as the manometric fluid serve to measure direclly the absolute pressure p of a fluid, provided that the space between the closed end and the mercury is substantially a perfect vacuum. 

Closed end vessel One in which the inlet and outlet streams are completely mixed and dispersion occurs only between the terminals. At the inlet where = 0, t/Co = [uC — De(3C/3 r)] =o at the outlet where x = L, (dC/dz) i = 0. These are called Danckwetts houndaty conditions.

Closed ends apply to reaetor operation and open ends are used with traeer studies when traeer is injeeted and sampled some distanee from the ends of the vessel. 

The detailed analysis of the way in which the overall and internal structure of PCNTs apparently arise is discussed elsewhere[20j. Here, we draw attention to some particularly interesting and unusual structures which occur in the body of the nanotubes. An expansion of the section of the central core which lies ca. 5 below the tip of the nanotube in Fig. 1 is shown in Fig. 2. Loop structures occur at points a-d and a -d in the walls in directly opposing pairs. This parallel behaviour must, on the basis of statistical arguments, be related and we interpret the patterns as evidence for a hemi-toroidal connection between the inner and outer adjacent concentric graphene tubes (i.e., turnovers similar to a rolled-over sock). That the loops, seen in the HRTEM, are evidence for very narrow single-walled closed-ended tubes trapped within the walls can be discounted, also on statistical grounds. 

The most frequently applied mechanical manometers in ventilation applications are fluid manometers, bur the following types are also used. The Bourdon tube is a small-voiume tube with an elliptic cross-section bent to the shape of a circular arc, the C-type. One end is open to the applied pressure while the other end is closed. The pressure inside the tube causes an elastic defonnation ot the tube and displaces the closed end, which is then converted, by means of a linkage mechanism, into the movement of a pointer. The Bourdon tube may be of a spiral or helical design as well.

Application The zirconia oxygen sensor is widely used for combustion control processes and for air/fuel ratio regulation in internal combustion engines. The closed-end portion of the electrode tube is inserted into the exhaust gas stream. In the control of industrial combustion processes, no out stack sampling system is required.
