The objective of the present study is to develop a cross-flow filtration module operated under low transmembrane pressure drop that can result in high permeate flux, and also to demonstrate the efficient use of such a module to continuously separate wax from ultrafine iron catalyst particles from simulated FTS catalyst/ wax slurry products from an SBCR pilot plant unit. An important goal of this research was to monitor and record cross-flow flux measurements over a longterm time-on-stream (TOS) period (500+ h). Two types (active and passive) of permeate flux maintenance procedures were developed and tested during this study. Depending on the efficiency of different flux maintenance or filter media cleaning procedures employed over the long-term test to stabilize the flux over time, the most efficient procedure can be selected for further development and cost optimization. The effect of mono-olefins and aliphatic alcohols on permeate flux and on the efficiency of the filter membrane for catalyst/wax separation was also studied. [Pg.272]

United Power Association experienced good fabric filter operation when burning up to 10 percent TDF. However, when the facility tested TDF levels up to 65 percent, operation of the fabric filter was of primary concern. The ash from the rubber was significantly more difficult to cleanoff the bags than the coal ash. The resultant ash build up on the bags caused an increased pressure drop across the system from 3" to 6". Water Flux The permeability of a UF membrane is determined by pore size, pore density, and the thickness of the membrane active layer. Water flux is measured in the absence of solute, generally on a newly made or freshly cleaned sample. The test is simple, and involves passing water through the membrane generally in dead-end flow under carefully controlled conditions. In a water flux test, the membrane behaves as a porous medium with the flow described by Darcy s law. Adjustments for viscosity and pressure are made to correct tne results to standard conditions, typically the viscosity of water at 25°C and the pressure to 50 psi (343 kPa). The water flux will be many multiples ofthe process flux when the membrane is being used for a separation. Virgin membrane has a standard water flux of over 1 mm/sec. By the time the membrane is incorporated into a device and used in an application, that flux drops to perhaps 100 pm/s. Process fluxes are much lower. [Pg.1796]

Martin (1959) and Bernard (1967) observed that clay swelling and/or dispersion accompanied by increased pressure drop resulted in incremental oil recovery. Tang and Morrow (1999) concluded that line mobilization (mainly kaolinite) increased recovery based on their observations (1) fired/acidized Berea core showed insensitivity of salinity on oil recovery, whereas unlired Berea core did show sensitivity and (2) for clean sandstones, the increase in oil recovery with the decrease in salinity was less than that for the clay sands. Some interesting applications The scales which develop on the surface of the pipes in geothermal plants are extremely hard and in many instances, they approximate the strength of the pipe. These scales are extremely difficult to remove. Cavitation cleaning systems have been used to remove such scales. Cavitation nozzles at pressure drops up to 100 MPa have been tested. The focal length of the bubble can be adjusted to cut the required scale thickness. [Pg.248]

The multi-pass filter test is the normally used method for evaluating filtration performance. It consists of circulating a highly contaminated fluid through the test filter at constant flow rate and temperature. As the filter element picks up contaminant particles, the differential pressure drop across it increases. The test is terminated at a predetermined differential pressure across the filter, and three basic performance characteristics are evaluated separation efficiency (against particle size), contaminant holding capacity, and clean-assembly flow or pressure drop performance. [Pg.500]
