Besides the platinum bath, a bath composed of nickel and iron in a ratio of 80-85 15-20 also appears to offer some advantages. It is recommended by Chevallier et al. For the analysis of tantalum, a bath containing 8 g of NiFe (80 20) and 2 g of tin is recommended by Friedrich et al. (156) for analysing a 2 g sample of compact tantalum (1700 C). The reason why this bath is better is that its carbon content is only about half that of the tin-free bath so that it is less viscous. However, the extent to which it can be used for the analysis of niobium is limited. A distinction must also be drawn between the analysis of compact metals and that of metal powders (167). The latter have a considerably higher oxygen content, and it appears that the addition of iron or nickel, already referred to, is very suitable for them (1700 C), but in the form of flux processes, i.e. not as a previously melted bath, but only introduced into the crucible together with the analytical sample. [Pg.301]
