Clays process

In kaolin (clay) processing, sulfur dioxide reduces colored impurities, eg, iron compounds. In the bromine industry, sulfur dioxide is used as an antioxidant in spent brine to be reinjected underground. In agriculture, especially in California, sulfur dioxide is used to increase water penetration and the avadabiHty of soil nutrients by virtue of its abiHty to acidulate saline—alkaH soils (327). It is also usefiil for cleaning ferric and manganese oxide deposits from tile drains (328).

Acid/clay Treatment. This was the original commercial process for reclamation of lubricant. The acid/clay process, such as the Meinken process, has the disadvantages that it generates large amounts of hazardous waste and cannot effectively remove the high concentrations of additives used in modern engine lubricant formulations. It is now superseded by other, newer, technologies. 

Base oils produced by the acid/clay process usually have a dark colour, have a burnt odour and are inferior to virgin mineral base oils. 

Yields are equivalent or better than for the clay process.

Cyclones, wet scrubbers and fabric filters are the most commonly used devices to control PM emissions from most clay processing operations. Cyclones often are used for product recovery from mechanical processes. In such cases, the cyclones are not considered to be an air pollution control device. Electrostatic precipitators also are used at some facilities to eontrol PM emissions.
