There are more finite limits to certain important classes of hazardous chemicals. Thus, the number of chemicals in current use as drugs in the United States is estimated by the Food and Drug Administration at about 4000. The total number of pesticides in current usage in the United States is about 15(X) (EPA estimate). More than 38,000 compounds are listed in the 1980 computer version of the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS), which is prepared for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (4). Published annually, this is the most comprehensive listing of toxic chemicals available the computerized version is updated quarterly and is available via the TOXLINE system of the National Library of Medicine and the CIS (Chemical Information System), sponsored jointly by the National Institutes of Health and EPA. [Pg.390]

Structure and Nomenclature Search System. This system links the collection of chemical databases found in the Chemical Information System (CIS), one of the first interactive systems for stmcture and substmcture searching. References from the separate files can be retrieved by SANSS using CAS Registry Numbers, and the database of stmctures may be searched for stmctures or substmctures. An adaptation of the SANSS software for substmcture searching has been incorporated in the Dmg Information System of the National Cancer Institute for its own use (54). [Pg.118]

The CESARS database contains comprehensive environmental and health information on chemicals. It provides detailed descriptions of chemical toxicity to humans, mammals, aquatic and plant life, as well as data on physical chemical properties, and environmental fate and persistence. Each record consists of chemical identification information and provides descriptive data on up to 23 topic areas, ranging from chemical properties to toxicity to environmental transport and fate. Records are in English. Available online through CCINFOline from the Canadian Centre For Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) and Chemical Information System (CIS) on CD-ROM through CCIN-FOdisc. [Pg.305]

The NIH/EPA Chemical Information System (CIS), is a collection of computer programs and data bases which has been developed to support scientific and administrative needs of the two Agencies (1). This chapter about the CIS will be primarily devoted to those areas of the CIS which can and are being used by EPA in support of TSCA. The discussions here only relate to the scientific aspects of the system, particularly the area of analytical chemistry. [Pg.255]

The output of each biological search is a list of NSC numbers. hese numbers are assigned successively to each compound upon registration of that compound in the chemical information system (CIS). This occurs upon acceptance of the compound for screening. NSC number 1 was assigned in 1955 and current (1979) NSC numbers are over 300,000. The results of the biological search are then sent to the CIS for extraction of the structure keys to be used as features. [Pg.571]

Instrument companies have added spectral search systems as a spectrometer accessory for modest-sized files. The largest mass spectral files are accessible through the NIH-EPA Chemical Information System (CIS), and the largest IR on-line search system is available on Tymshare (196). [Pg.732]
