Search biological

The output of each biological search is a list of NSC numbers. hese numbers are assigned successively to each compound upon registration of that compound in the chemical information system (CIS). This occurs upon acceptance of the compound for screening. NSC number 1 was assigned in 1955 and current (1979) NSC numbers are over 300,000. The results of the biological search are then sent to the CIS for extraction of the structure keys to be used as features. 

SOCRATES is used widely by Pfizer scientists in a VAX cluster computer environment at Sandwich and is well regarded both for its ease of use and its range of integrated search capabilities, allowing combinations of a variety of chemical and biological search parameters. 

Database Interfaces. A company that uses a general DBMS for its biological information and a MACCS database for its chemical information might create a biological search menu and a biological-chemical viewing menu for use in conjunction with the chemical search menu. Then the biological database could be searched and the results viewed... 

As is so often the case in biology, searches for an overarching principle frequently are doomed to failure from the beginning. Evolution can, and does, make use of anything that works. As the somewhat whimsical title of this piece is meant to remind us there s more than one way to skin a cat (and I have a cat, so believe me, I ve thought about this).

If desired, a biological search may be carried out before or after the chemical search. This may perform the function of reducing the total search output, or it may be carried out merely to produce all the test and sample data for each compound which is a hit on the chemical search.

Over the past seven years we at Rohm and Haas Company have been developing a computerized chemical and biological information system called ACCIS (Agricultural Chemicals Computerized Information System)(1).
