Chromatographic analysis of gases

The performance of electrical transformers can be monitored by chromatographic analysis of the gases dissolved in the mineral oil contained in the isolating system. In a study of the effects of five factors on chromatographic results for the analysis of ethylene, a fractional factorial was executed by two students (M.M. da Silva Jr. and C.A.G. da Camara) as an out-of-class assignment in a chemometrics course (Table 4A.3). [Pg.182]

Of the five main effects, the one for factor 3 (equilibrium time) is clearly secondary. As for the other four, we cannot discard the possibility that some of their values are mainly due to interactions. For example, the effect of stirring (4) is confounded with interaction 12 (sample volume and temperature) while the effect of pressurization (5) is confounded with the interaction of temperature and time (23). Actually, [Pg.182]

The negligible presence of N and 0 are probably due, at least in part, to air contamination during sample preparation for the GC analysis. There are now portable micro-chromatographs available weighing only a few kg for the rapid analysis of gases and volatile products. Although containing a reservoir of the carrier gas to assure their autonomy they are not bulky (Figure 2.19). [Pg.52]

Infrared spectroscopy can be used to perform qualitative analysis of gases. Pierson et al. (1956) have given a chart to be used for this purpose. Also, infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography are a useful combination for characterizing volatile substances (see Appendix 1). Sometimes fractions from a vapor fractometer are collected as vapors in a gas cell. White et al. (1959) have described a microgas cell of 1 m path for use with a beam condenser to observe the spectra of gas chromatographic fractions less than 0.05 % of the total charge. [Pg.58]
