In terms of tonnage the bulk of plastics produced are thermoplastics, a group which includes polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride (p.v.c.), the nylons, polycarbonates and cellulose acetate. There is however a second class of materials, the thermosetting plastics. They are supplied by the manufacturer either as long-chain molecules, similar to a typical thermoplastic molecule or as rather small branched molecules. They are shaped and then subjected to either heat or chemical reaction, or both, in such a way that the molecules link one with another to form a cross-linked network (Fig. 18.6). As the molecules are now interconnected they can no longer slide extensively one past the other and the material has set, cured or cross linked. Plastics materials behaving in this way are spoken of as thermosetting plastics, a term which is now used to include those materials which can in fact cross link with suitable catalysts at room temperature. [Pg.916]

Plastics are one example. Scientists use the term plastic to refer to polymers, which are materials composed of a chain of bonded molecules. For instance, most credit cards are made from a plastic known as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which consists of linked molecules of vinyl chloride. (Old vinyl record albums were often made from the same material.) The first plastic made entirely in the laboratory (as opposed to natural products) was Bakelite, concocted aroimd 1908 by the Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland (1863-1944). [Pg.15]

The importance of proper RO membrane selection has already been discussed. A review of commercially available RO membranes revealed five different basic membranes that could provide organic recovery. Cellulose acetate and cellulose acetate blends, aromatic polyamide, polyamide thin-film composite, cross-linked polyimine thin-film composite (FT-30), and polybenzimidazole were available when this work was performed. Mis-localisation of annexin 2 has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of Dent s disease. This term is now used collectively to describe what was previously four conditions that affect kidney function X-linked recessive nephrolithiasis with renal failure, X-linked recessive hypophosphatemic rickets, idiopathic low molecular weight proteinuria with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis and Dent s disease. Patients with this condition present with low molecular weight proteinuria and hypercalciuria. Renal stones, nephrocalcinosis and renal failure are common late-stage developments. The condition has been attributed to abnormal acidification within endosomes of the proximal tubular cells. It is very rare and is usually caused by mutations in the voltage-dependent Cl /H+ chloride antiporter CLCN5, but occasionally in the PI4,5P2 5-phosphatase, OCRL1 (oculocerebrorenal syndrome of Lowe protein 1). [Pg.15]

Supports used for obtaining Ziegler-Natta catalysts can differ essentially from one another. Some of the supports may contain reactive surface groups (such as hydroxyl groups present in specially prepared metal oxides) while others do not contain such reactive functional groups (such as pure anhydrous metal chlorides). Therefore, the term supported catalyst is used in a very wide sense. Supported catalysts comprise not only systems in which the transition metal compound is linked to the support by means of a chemical covalent bond but also systems in which the transition metal atom may occupy a position in a lattice structure, or where complexation, absorption or even occlusion may take place [28]. The transition metal may also be anchored to the support via a Lewis base in such a case the metal complexes the base, which is coordinatively fixed on the support surface [53,54]. [Pg.61]

A comparison was made between the mechanisms of action of the PVC costabiliser N-phenyl-3-acetylpyrrolidin-2,4-dione and existing costabilisers. The results obtained demonstrated that the performance of short-term costabilisers in calcium/zinc formulations was linked to their ability to complex zinc stearate prior to the initiation of degradation and that this prevented the early formation of prodegradant zinc chloride. 6 refs. [Pg.53]
