Chinese intellectual property

Unprepared for cut-throat competition. As we mentioned earlier, Chinese companies are ruthless in their efficiency, and foreign players trying to emulate this can run into major hurdles. In particular they are at threat from a weak intellectual property environment, disappointing supplier quality, and unreliable local distributors.

Today, despite difficulties in communication, the future bodes well for new Chinese-Western business. The Chinese are working hard to catch up and compete with Western-style enterprises. Business schools are sprouting up on mainland China and Chinese students are learning about the concepts of corporate image, brand equity and intellectual property. 

The environment for intellectual property protection is still a concern in China. Pharmaceutical companies ve been alarmed by the 2004 legal decision to overturn the Chinese patent for Pfizer s Viagra (sildenafil citrate). This was followed by a case where GlaxoSmithKline stepped back from defending its patent in China for rosiglitazone, the active ingredient of its anti-diabetes drug Avandia.
