Here we see that the macrocycle consists of two pyrrole units and two pyrrolenine units. After a ir-electron count, the great American chemist, R.B. Woodward, pointed out that the two pyrrole units could be considered to have their own aromatic sextet of electrons. Each pyrrolenine unit, on the other hand, is one electron short of the aromatic sextet, having only five tt-electrons. In order to make up this deficiency, they can be thought of as borrowing electron density from the neighbouring meso-carbons. This means that, compared with the pyrrole carbons, the meso-carbons will have a tendency to be electron deficient and, therefore, would be less enthusiastic about electrophilic substitution. [Pg.75]

Every year 10% of the American chemists spend 40 hours in conference rooms and use 19 pounds of paper. Even if this statement is not a truthful one, it expresses one of the well established forms of scientific statements, namely a statistical one. We are quite used to dealing with statistics, the collection and analysis of data and the drawing of conclusions from this data ( 2. ) In a scientific way, this mode constitutes no problem. On the other hand compare these two statements Get a shot against the flu because only very few of the inoculated people will get the flu, versus Get a shot against the flu, because only 3% of the inoculated people will get the flu . The second statement provides more precise information than the first. [Pg.2]

Security was quite different from all the other chapters in the book. It was very brief at 12 pages, tied as shortest with the introductory chapter Nature Points the Way . The chapter was also very vague compared to the lists and descriptions that accompanied the other sections. There was no mention of the U S. Chemical Warfare Service, the main source of chemical weapons for the American forces in World War I. In fact, no specific war chemicals were referred to by name and Morrison did not name a single chemist, unlike the other chapters that list materials and note the work of famous scientists. About a third of the chapter is devoted to fire fighting, police work, and safety at sea rather than warfare. Morrison deals with actual gas warfare in a mere two paragraphs, comparing it to perfume. [Pg.207]

With due regard for the difference of opinion between the Japanese and American chemists, on the one hand, and the Soviet, on the other, the latter continued their efforts to prove the correctness of the two-stage scheme of the process. With this aim in view study was made of nucleophilic substitution reactions in a wide range of media — from strongly nucleophilic to superacidic. Also, the authors include the comparative research of structure and properties of carbocations generated from the same precursors in different media. [Pg.160]

Majors conducted helpful GC user surveys again in 1995 (13) and 2003 (14). In the 2003 survey, the use of packed columns continued to decline because many packed column gas chromatographic methods have been replaced by equivalent capillary methods. There are now capillary column procedures for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), American Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC), and U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) methods. Despite the increase in capillary column users (91% in 2003 compared to 79% in 1990), there is still a significant number of packed column users, for several reasons (1) packed columns and related supplies and accessories have a substantial presence in catalogs and Web sites of the major column vendors, and (2) the use of packed colunms become apparent to the authors of this text after discussions with attendees in short courses on GC offered at professional meetings. [Pg.10]

A shorter (60 m) column of TC-70 (similar to BPX-70) has been used to determine the total tram content tram- 6 , -18 1, 20 1, -18 2, and -18 3) in unhydrogenated oils and PHVO with acceptable results compared to the AOCS method Ce lh-05 (American Oil Chemists Society, 2005 Shirasawa et al., 2007). The analysis time was reduced from 74 to 40 min and although the same degree of information concerning the composition of individual isomers would not be obtained by this method, it is not important when only total tram fatty acids are required. [Pg.118]

What began as a national organization with the aim of providing all chemically relevant information to American chemists has become an international service. Apart from CAS there is no comparable organization, which documents almost all the publications in the field of chemistry (approximately 98% of the chemically relevant information worldwide). There is hardly a comparable institution which provides such systematic and thorough coverage of knowledge in other scientific fields. Today the Chemical Abstracts Service employs about 1375 people, 520 of them are chemists. [Pg.4]
