Acrolein, acrylamide, hydroxyalkyl acrylates, and other functional derivatives can be more hazardous from a health standpoint than acryhc acid and its simple alkyl esters. Furthermore, some derivatives, such as the alkyl 2-chloroacrylates, are powerful vesicants and can cause serious eye injuries. Thus, although the hazards of acryhc acid and the normal alkyl acrylates are moderate and they can be handled safely with ordinary care to industrial hygiene, this should not be assumed to be the case for compounds with chemically different functional groups (see Industrial hygiene Plant safety Toxicology). [Pg.157]

Dinitrochlorobenzene is used primarily in the manufacture of azo dyes other areas include the manufacture of fungicides, mbber chemicals, and explosives. It is produced by Eastman Kodak Company and Sandoz Chemical Corporation and its bulk fob price is 2.73/kg. 2,4-Dinitrochlorobenzene is more toxic than nitrobenzene. It is an extremely powerful skin irritant and must be handled with great cate. [Pg.68]

One feature of reprocessing plants which poses potential risks of a different nature from those ia a power plant is the need to handle highly radioactive and fissionable material ia Hquid form. This is necessary to carry out the chemical separations process. The Hquid materials and the equipment with which it comes ia contact need to be surrounded by 1.5—1.8-m thick high density concrete shielding and enclosures to protect the workers both from direct radiation exposure and from inhalation of airborne radioisotopes. Rigid controls must also be provided to assure that an iaadvertent criticahty does not occur. [Pg.241]

This type of pump is used to handle abrasive, chemically corrosive, and oxidizing liquids, where conventional pumps would require exotic alloys. The wet end of these pumps is non-metallic or lined and coated, sealing and isolating any metal component. The power end is normal. [Pg.61]

The individual characteristics and uses of the basic grades of the austenitic irons are given in Table 3.55. The major uses for these materials occur in the handling of fluids in the chemical and petroleum industries and also in the power industry and in many marine applications. The austenitic irons are also used in the food, soap and plastics industries where low corrosion rates are essential in order to avoid contamination of the product. Ni-Resist grades Type 2, 3 or 4 are generally used for such applications but the highly alloyed Type 4 Ni-Resist is preferred where low product contamination is of prime importance. [Pg.610]

The understanding of the catalytic function of enzymes is a prime objective in biomolecular science. In the last decade, significant developments in computational approaches have made quantum chemistry a powerful tool for the study of enzymatic mechanisms. In all applications of quantum chemistry to proteins, a key concept is the active site, i.e. a local region where the chemical reactivity takes place. The concept of the active site makes it possible to scale down large enzymatic systems to models small enough to be handled by accurate quantum chemistry methods. [Pg.30]

Since 1992 a variety of related but much more powerful data-handling strategies have been applied to the supervised analysis of PyMS data. Such methods fall within the framework of chemometrics the discipline concerned with the application of statistical and mathematical methods to chemical data.81-85 These methods seek to relate known spectral inputs to known targets, and the resulting model is then used to predict the target of an unknown input.86... [Pg.330]

Solutions of sulfur trioxide in cone, sulfuric acid (oleum) are available with various proportions of dissolved sulfur trioxide, and the 3 entries in Handling Chemicals Safely 1980 deal with the properties and hazards of solutions with 65, 30 and 20% of sulfur trioxide, respectively. As expected, the reactivity and oxidising power increase with the content of sulfur trioxide. [Pg.1873]
