Sulfonated EPDMs are formulated to form a number of rubbery products including adhesives for footwear, garden hoses, and in the formation of calendered sheets. Perfluori-nated ionomers marketed as Nation (DuPont) are used for membrane applications including chemical-processing separations, spent-acid regeneration, electrochemical fuel cells, ion-selective separations, electrodialysis, and in the production of chlorine. It is also employed as a solid -state catalyst in chemical synthesis and processing. lonomers are also used in blends with other polymers. [Pg.229]

Other chemical apphcations being studied include the use of microwaves in the petroleum (qv) industry (175), chemical synthesis (176,177), preparation of semiconductor materials (178), and the processing of polymers (179). [Pg.346]

For industrial products, such as films and fibers (woven and un-woven), the concept development stage is shown in Fig. 10.3-2. Under materials development, searches are carried out for chemicals and chemical mixtures having the desired properties and performance, and reaction paths for chemical synthesis. Under product/process technology development, often new methods are needed for example, methods for creating multilayer films. And, finally, under manufacturing process development, an example of something new would be multilayer dies for producing multilayer polymer films. [Pg.291]

This chapter surveys different process options to convert terpenes, plant oils, carbohydrates and lignocellulosic materials into valuable chemicals and polymers. Three different strategies of conversion processes integrated in a biorefinery scheme are proposed from biomass to bioproducts via degraded molecules , from platform molecules to bioproducts , and from biomass to bioproducts via new synthesis routes . Selected examples representative of the three options are given. Attention is focused on conversions based on one-pot reactions involving one or several catalytic steps that could be used to replace conventional synthetic routes developed for hydrocarbons. [Pg.54]

Supercritical fluids have also been used purely as the solvent for polymerization reactions. Supercritical fluids have many advantages over other solvents for both the synthesis and processing of materials (see Chapter 6), and there are a number of factors that make scCCH a desirable solvent for carrying out polymerization reactions. As well as being cheap, nontoxic and nonflammable, separation of the solvent from the product is achieved simply by depressurization. This eliminates the energy-intensive drying steps that are normally required after the reaction. Carbon dioxide is also chemically relatively inert and hence can be used for a wide variety of reactions. For example, CO2 is inert towards free radicals and this can be important in polymerization reactions since there is then no chain transfer to the solvent. This means that solvent incorporation into the polymer does not take place, giving a purer material. [Pg.209]

The combination of careful chemical synthesis with NSE and SANS experiments sheds some light on the fast relaxation processes observed in the collective dynamics of block copolymers melts. The results reveal the existence of an important driving force acting on the junction points at and even well above the ODT. Modelling the surface forces by an expression for the surface tension, it was possible to describe the NSE spectra consistently. The experimental surface tension agrees reasonably well with the Helfand predictions, which are strictly valid only in the strong-segregation hmit. Beyond that, these data are a first example for NSE experiments on the interface dynamics in a bulk polymer system. [Pg.181]

Carbon dioxide is a widely available, inexpensive, and renewable resource. Hence, its utilization as a source of chemical carbon or as a solvent in chemical synthesis can lead to less of an impact on the environment than alternative processes. The preparation of aliphatic polycarbonates via the coupling of epoxides or oxetanes with CO2 illustrates processes where carbon dioxide can serve in both capacities, i.e., as a monomer and as a solvent. The reactions represented in (1) and (2) are two of the most well-studied instances of using carbon dioxide in chemical synthesis of polymeric materials, and represent environmentally benign routes to these biodegradable polymers. We and others have comprehensively reviewed this important area of chemistry fairly recently. Nevertheless, because of the intense interest and activity in this discipline, regular updates are warranted. [Pg.3]

Most modern materials are formed empirically by solid-state methods. These methods generally involve more processing activity than chemical synthesis (for example, sintering of ceramic powders, modifying concrete by polymers, thermomechanical processing of alloys, layering polymeric membranes for... [Pg.6]
