The carbon dioxide concentration in the film can also be controlled by other physical and chemical parameters, for instance the type of catalyst (influencing the reaction rate constants) or the use of more hydrophobic resin (influencing the water concentration). [Pg.239]

The modeling of steady-state problems in combustion and heat and mass transfer can often be reduced to the solution of a system of ordinary or partial differential equations. In many of these systems the governing equations are highly nonlinear and one must employ numerical methods to obtain approximate solutions. The solutions of these problems can also depend upon one or more physical/chemical parameters. For example, the parameters may include the strain rate or the equivalence ratio in a counterflow premixed laminar flame (1-2). In some cases the combustion scientist is interested in knowing how the system mil behave if one or more of these parameters is varied. This information can be obtained by applying a first-order sensitivity analysis to the physical system (3). In other cases, the researcher may want to know how the system actually behaves as the parameters are adjusted. As an example, in the counterflow premixed laminar flame problem, a solution could be obtained for a specified value of the strain... [Pg.404]

The resolution can be improved by increasing the column plate number, N, and/ or the separation factor, a (a = the ratio of the retention factors of the two compounds). N is the physical parameter and a is the chemical parameter for the separation. Higher N and a values give a better separation. [Pg.1]

The convolution-deconvolution voltammetry, combined with digital simulation techniques, was applied [36] to determine the electrochemical and chemical parameters for the Cd(II)/Cd(Hg) system in aqueous NaNOs solution. The agreement between experimental and theoretical data indicated that the reduction mechanism at the mercury electrode proceeds via consisting in chemical step (C) followed by charge transfer step (E)-so-called CE mechanism [37]. [Pg.771]

In on effort to establish the mechanism of coal flotation and thus establish the basis for an anthracite lithotype separation, some physical and chemical parameters for anthracite lithotype differentiation were determined. The electrokinetic properties were determined by streaming potential methods. Results indicated a difference in the characteristics of the lithotypes. Other physical and chemical analyses of the lithotypes were mode to establish parameters for further differentiation. Electron-microprobe x-ray, x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescent, infrared, and density analyses were made. Chemical analyses included proximate, ultimate, and sulfur measurements. The classification system used was a modification of the Stopes system for classifying lithotypes for humic coals. [Pg.364]

In this section, we describe some of our efforts focused on clarifying the role of the membrane charge density (cM) as a key chemical parameter for transfection by Lac CL-DNA complexes. In a previous study, we had tentatively identified cM as a universal parameter for transfection by lamellar complexes [25]. However, that study was limited by the range of charge densities accessible with commercially available lipids. [Pg.196]

Information about excipients is useful in the initial planning and interpretation of the excipient compatibility results. Important factors to consider for excipients include their physical-chemical properties. The Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients lists important information on structure, moisture content, melting point, pH, solubility, and equilibrium moisture at variable relative humidity for individual excipients (27). An example of relevant physical-chemical parameters for some select excipients is detailed in Table 1. A spectroscopic review of excipients (28) has been completed, and extensive reviews of some of the most common types of excipients (i.e., carbohydrate based) are published (29). [Pg.422]

Because bioluminescence in marine surface waters (upper 100 m) is primarily due to small plankton, it can he successfully characterized by relatively simple photometer systems. The two basic types of bioluminescence detectors are an open type that views directly out into the seawater and a closed type that views a closed volume through which seawater is pumped. The bioluminescence variability is an interdependent phenomenon often associated with changes in physical and chemical parameters. For example, ocean frontal regions are almost always associated with enhanced levels of bioluminescence. Bioluminescence spectral content and signal kinetics often indicate the type of organisms present. [Pg.211]

All these factors are functions of the concentration of the chemical species, temperature and pressure of the system. At constant diffu-sionai resistance, the increase in the rate of chemical reaction decreases the effectiveness factor while al a constant intrinsic rate of reaction, the increase of the diffusional resistances decreases the effectiveness factor. Elnashaie et al. (1989a) showed that the effect of the diffusional resistances and the intrinsic rate of reactions are not sufficient to explain the behaviour of the effectiveness factor for reversible reactions and that the effect of the equilibrium constant should be introduced. They found that the effectiveness factor increases with the increase of the equilibrium constants and hence the behaviour of the effectiveness factor should be explained by the interaction of the effective diffusivities, intrinsic rates of reaction as well as the equilibrium constants. The equations of the dusty gas model for the steam reforming of methane in the porous catalyst pellet, are solved accurately using the global orthogonal collocation technique given in Appendix B. Kinetics and other physico-chemical parameters for the steam reforming case are summarized in Appendix A. [Pg.138]

The grouping of the rocks in the Melbourne volcanic field in Fig. 16.31 based on their chemical compositions and Sr/ Sr ratios is expressed in Fig. 16.32 by the quasi-linear correlation of the isotopic and chemical parameters. For example, the Sr/ Sr ratios are positively correlated with the silica concentrations (cor = +0.9353). The Sr/ Sr ratios also decrease with rising concentrations of MgO (cor = -0.9140), and they increase with increasing concentrations of alkali metals (cor = +0.8080). The correlation of the Sr/ Sr ratios... [Pg.548]

Oligoethylsiloxane viscosity, at low temperature in pardcular, can be improved by means of introducdon of a definite number of dimethylsiloxane uruts into the molecules. The best combinadon of physical and chemical parameters for oligomethylethylsiloxanes, as previous research has shown, can be obtained at unit stadsdcal distribudon in oligomer chains. [Pg.595]

Accounts of aqueous synthesis [33] of ZnO are replete with examples of changes in morphology (including acicular and rodlike shapes) as a complex function of chemical parameters. For rod-like shapes, the presence of amines has been found to be important. In a similar way, in micellar synthesis of ZnO from alkoxides [252], it has been found that the presence of ammonia was vital for the formation of rod-like particles. [Pg.104]
