Chemical language editor

Figure 6.38 shows schematically how the two-dimensional structure is turned into valuable information. The two-dimensional structure is the common representation of a molecule in the chemical language as it is obtained from structure editor software. This representation does not include explicit information about the spatial arrangement of atoms. Several atoms in this molecule can appear in different spatial orientations leading to different enantiomers. 

The order of procedures that result in the publication of an EHC monograph is shown in the flow chart on the next page. A designated staff member of IPCS, responsible for the scientific quality of the document, serves as Responsible Officer (RO). The IPCS Editor is responsible for layout and language. The first draft, prepared by consultants or, more usually, staff from an IPCS Participating Institution, is based initially on data provided from the International Register of Potentially Toxic Chemicals and from reference databases such as Medline and Toxline.

Professor Chang has served on the American Chemical Society Examination Committee, the National Chemistry Olympiad Examination Committee, and the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Committee. He is an editor of The Chemical Educator. Professor Chang has written books on physical chemistry, industrial chemistry, and physical science. He has also coauthored books on the Chinese language, children s picture books, and a novel for young readers. 

He has been a member of the scientific committees of International Congresses of Theoretical Chemists using Latin Languages since 1971, of the Mediterranean Schools on Surface States and Chemical Bonds since 1997, of European Workshops on Quantum Systems in Chemistry and Physics since 1996. He was also a member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry, the Journal of Molecular Structure (Theochem), Molecular Engineering, and Progress in Theoretical Chemistry and Physics. He was the founding editor of Folia Chimica Theor-etica Latina.
