Charybdis

Eddy Currents ttike their name from the swirls (eddies) observed in turbulent water flow. The Greek mythology tells us about Charybdis. A monster eddy current between Italy and Sicily whose attractive field pulled unwary sailors to their destruction. Our kind of eddy currents are usually not so dangerous, they flow in electrical conductors and are a branch of Electromagnetics. Where does that spring from Could it make eddy currents the very oldest NDT technique ... [Pg.270]

Computer simulations showed that the first two of these catastrophes become more probable as the size of the molecular population increases. In order to avoid them, the population of a hypercycle would need to be kept as small as possible. The probability of collapse, however, decreases with increasing population. Because of these contradictions, Ursula Niesert gave one of her articles the title The Origin of Life between Scylla and Charybdis , because computer simulations indicate that there is only a small interval of hypercycle populations in which all three of the above catastrophes can be excluded. [Pg.227]

Nor, while flirting with the Scylla of naive empiricism, have practitioners of chemistry escaped the Charybdis of naive realism. Dalton s atomism was in fact unrelentingly and naively realist. His illustrative plates in the New System of Chemistry (1808) are claimed there to exhibit "the mode of combination of some of the more simple cases" of ultimate particles forming bigger ones. At midcentury, Williamson, Dalton s compatriot, received some notoriety for his defense of realism, albeit a more sophisticated variety, particularly in a London Chemical Society debate in 1869.6... [Pg.75]

Charybdis Technologies. In the Calypso Reaction Block , multi-well reaetion arrays are designed for both solution and solid-phase synthesis applications. Well volumes range from 2 to 10 mL, pressures up to 207 kPa (30 psi), and temperatures from —80 to +180°C. [Pg.251]

If anything, the burdens that cardiovascular disease impose on our society are only going to get worse over the next few decades. Our population is getting older, has more risk factors, more disease, and more effective therapeutic options. We are caught between the Scylla of an emerging epidemic of ischemic heart disease as we get older, and the Charybdis of better therapies to reduce premature events and keep our patients alive longer. [Pg.12]

Compromises like this are always useful and make life easier. However, often they fail in the most critical situations. For example, take one fundamental question in the origin of hfe is there a transcendental power behind it, or not It would be nice to find a balance, a hybrid between Scylla and Charybdis, but, unfortunately, this is an either/or situation. [Pg.10]

Typical Experimental Procedure (Plate Production). Production of an 80-member array was successfully completed using a Charybdis 96-well Teflon block, encapsulated in a Calypso reaction frame assembly. Reagents were transferred into the 96-well plate using either a Quadra 96 or Rapid Plate 96. The blocks were then heated at 65° for 3 days and the solvent evaporated in vacuo at 65°. Scavenging with PS-TsNHNH2 (6 equiv.) and PS-NCO (1 equiv.) was performed at the plate level and the resins were added using a Millipore column loader. Evaporation was performed in a Savant evaporator for 2 h. [Pg.494]

Now the Marcus theory must tread lightly between the Scylla of adiabaticity and the Charybdis of non-adiabaticity Since the theory is based on a classical treatment of chemical dynamics, it must assume that the interaction energy (resonance energy) in the transition state is so small that one can neglect its... [Pg.88]

It is of course the ambition of every experimenter... to make a discovery, to sail safely between the Scylla of intellectual prejudice which makes us reject evidence not really integrated without preconceived notions, and the Charybdis of irrelevance which has swallowed many working days spent in pursuit of instrumental artifice. [Pg.212]

Profile According to company statements, Charybdis was started in 1996 to design, develop, and implement the new standard in combinatorial technology and informatics, and to apply this paradigm towards the discovery of novel, potent, and effective chemical entities. [Pg.236]
