If changes have been made to the process (e.g. if incoming water quality cannot be maintained or other uncertainties arise concerning the corrosion behavior of the construction materials) it is possible to incorporate coupons or probes of the material into the plant and monitor their corrosion behavior. This approach may be used to assist in the materials selection process for a replacement plant. Small coupons (typically, 25 x 50 mm) of any material may be suspended in the process stream and removed at intervals for weight loss determination and visual inspection for localized corrosion. Electrical resistance probes comprise short strands for the appropriate material electrically isolated from the item of plant. An electrical connection from each end of the probe is fed out of the plant to a control box. The box senses the electrical resistance of the probe. The probe s resistance rises as its cross-sectional area is lost through corrosion. [Pg.911]

Several material properties exhibit a distinct change over the range of Tg. These properties can be classified into three major categories—thermodynamic quantities (i.e., enthalpy, heat capacity, volume, and thermal expansion coefficient), molecular dynamics quantities (i.e., rotational and translational mobility), and physicochemical properties (i.e., viscosity, viscoelastic proprieties, dielectric constant). Cross-section structure. An anisotropic membrane (also called asymmetric ) has a thin porous or nonporous selective barrier, supported mechanically by a much thicker porous substructure. This type of morphology reduces the effective thickness of the selective barrier, and the permeate flux can be enhanced without changes in selectivity. Isotropic ( symmetric ) membrane cross-sections can be found for self-supported nonporous membranes (mainly ion-exchange) and macroporous microfiltration (MF) membranes (also often used in membrane contactors [1]). All the above-mentioned membranes can in principle be made from one material. In contrast to such an integrally anisotropic membrane (homogeneous with respect to composition), a thin-film composite (TFC) membrane consists of different materials for the thin selective barrier layer and the support structure. In composite membranes in general, a combination of two (or more) materials with different characteristics is used with the aim to achieve synergetic properties. Other examples besides thin-film are pore-filled or pore surface-coated composite membranes or mixed-matrix membranes [3]. [Pg.21]
