Centrifuges continuous filtering

Check the sample solution for particulate material. If insoluble silicate (white, gelatinous materials) or other particles are noted, centrifuge or filter the solution through a glass fibre filter before loading the sample onto the preconditioned column. This step is important in order to maintain a continuous flow of the sample solution through the column.

Liquid waste streams with a high-suspended solids content can be cleaned up by solids removal in clarifiers, thickeners, and liquid cyclones and by accelerated settling by inclined Chevron settlers or the like [73]. For waste streams with very finely divided solids in suspension (i.e., less than about 100 pm) dissolved air flotation techniques have been shown to be more efficient than methods employing sedimentation. Final dewatering of the sludges obtained may be carried out on a continuous filter or a centrifuge. The clarified water product can be accepted for more potential options of reuse or final disposal options than untreated water, and the separated solids may be burned or discarded to landfill, as appropriate [74].

Two hundred fifty milliliters of 1.1 M orthophosphoric acid is added with vigorous stirring to 250 ml. of 1 M uranyl nitrate or perchlorate solution. The solution is seeded with a few crystals of the product to promote immediate precipitation. The suspension is then stirred for 12 hours and the mother liquor removed by centrifuging or filtering. The precipitate is slurried in 250 ml. of ca. 0.01 M perchloric acid for 12 hours, and the suspension is filtered. The main types of filtering centrifuges are suspended batch machines, which are discontinuous in their operation automatic short-cycle batch machines and continuous conveyor centrifuges. In suspended centrufuges the filter media are canvas or other fabric or woven metal cloth. In automatic machines fine metal screens are used in conveyor centrifuges the filter medium is usually the slotted wall of the basket itself.
