In turbomachineiy the centrifugal flow and the axial-flow compressors are the ones used for compressing gases. Positive-displacement compressors such as reciprocating, gear-type, or lobe-type are widely used in the industry for many other applications such as slurry pumping.

The performance of intensive plasma exchange (removal from an adult of 2-3 liters of plasma with substitution of fresh plasma to maintain the patient s blood volume) requires separation of plasma from cells, so that the patient s own cells can be returned. There are two methods of plasma separation centrifugal flow separation and flow filtration (1,2). 

The rotating disk electrode, described in Section 11.6, has the advantage that the fluid flow is well defined emd that the system is compact and simple to use. The rotation of the disk imposes a centrifugal flow that in turn causes a radially uniform flow toward the disk. If the reaction on the disk is mass-transfer controlled, the associated current density is imiform, which greatly simplifies the mathematical description. As discussed in sections 5.6.1 and 8.1.3, the current distribution below the mass-transfer-limited current is not uniform. The distribution of current and potential associated with the disk geometry has been demonstrated to cause a frequency dispersion in impedance results. The rotating disk is therefore ideally suited for experiments in which the disk rotation speed is modulated while im-der the mass-transfer limited condition. Such experiments yield another t)q)e of impedance known as the electrohydrodynamic impedance, discussed in Chapter 15.

Laboratory test tube centrifuges can determine if there is a sufficient density difference between the two phases to consider sedimentation as an alternative. If there is a sharp separation, one can anticipate the same in the field. One can also answer the following questions. Do the solids settle or float Is the solid phase granular or amorphous What is the moisture content The characteristics of the solids indicate the solids discharge design required, i.e., scroll in decanters, or in disk centrifuges, flow-through nozzles or wall valves. 

The charge in the crystallizing tub is cooled to 30 C and is then delivered by gravity to a centrifugal. The mother liquor leaving the centrifugal flows to an elaborate system of catch boxes, where it is cooled. Periodically, the water in the catch boxes is siphoned out to permit removal of the settled p-nitroaniline.
