The importance of the solid-liquid interface in a host of applications has led to extensive study over the past 50 years. Certainly, the study of the solid-liquid interface is no easier than that of the solid-gas interface, and all the complexities noted in Section VIM are present. The surface structural and spectroscopic techniques presented in Chapter VIII are not generally applicable to liquids (note, however. Ref. 1). There is, perforce, some retreat to phenomenology, empirical rules, and semiempirical models. The concept of two-state systems occupies a central role in quantum mechanics [16,26]. As discussed extensively by Feynmann et al. [16], benzene and ammonia are examples of simple two-state systems Their properties are best described by assuming that the wave function that represents them is a combination of two base states. In the cases of ammonia and benzene, the two base states are equivalent. The two base states necessarily give rise to two independent states, which we named twin states [27,28]. One of them is the ground state, the other an excited states. The twin states are the ones observed experimentally. [Pg.330]

Proposed flux models for porous media invariably contain adjustable parameters whose values must be determined from suitably designed flow or diffusion measurements, and further measurements may be made to test the relative success of different models. This may involve extensive programs of experimentation, and the planning and interpretation of such work forms the topic of Chapter 10, However, there is in addition a relatively small number of experiments of historic importance which establish certain general features of flow and diffusion in porous media. These provide criteria which must be satisfied by any proposed flux model and are therefore of central importance in Che subject. They may be grouped into three classes. [Pg.50]

The disk filter is similar to the dmm in operation, but filtration is conducted using a series of large diameter filter disks that carry the filter medium on both sides of the disk. They are connected to the main horizontal shaft and partly immersed in the feed slurry. The central shaft is connected by a set of valves which serve to provide vacuum and air as in dmm filters. As the disk sections submerge during rotation, vacuum is appHed to form a cake on both sides of the disk. The cycle of operation is similar to that in a dmm filter. One unit can have as many as 12 disks of up to 5-m diameter. Disk filters, both compact and cost effective, are used extensively in the iron ore industry to dewater magnetite concentrates. [Pg.414]

A development in the 1960s was that of on-line elemental analysis of slurries using x-ray fluorescence. These have become the industry standard. Both in-stream probes and centralized analyzers are available. The latter is used in large-scale operations. The success of the analyzer depends on how representative the sample is and how accurate the caUbration standards are. Neutron activation analyzers are also available (45,51). These are especially suitable for light element analysis. On-stream analyzers are used extensively in base metal flotation plants as well as in coal plants for ash analysis. Although elemental analysis provides important data, it does not provide information on mineral composition which is most cmcial for all separation processes. Devices that can give mineral composition are under development. [Pg.417]

Oakmoss. Extracts of oakmoss are extensively used in perfumery to furnisli parts of the notes of the fougnre or chypre type. The first step in the preparation of an oakmoss extract is treatment of the Hchen Evemiaprunastri (L.) Ach., collected from oak trees mainly in southern and central Europe, with a hydrocarbon solvent to obtain a concrete. The concrete is then further processed by solvent extraction or distillation to more usable products, of which absolutes are the most versatile for perfumery use. A definitive analysis of oakmoss volatiles was performed in 1975 (52). The principal constituents of a Yugoslav oakmoss are shown in Table 15 (53). A number of phenoHc compounds are responsible for the total odor impression. Of these, methyl P-orcinol carboxylate is the most characteristic of oakmoss. [Pg.314]

Pimento Berry Oil. The pimento or allspice tree, Pimenta dioca L. (syn. P. officinalis, Liadl.), a native of the West Indies and Central America, yields two essential oils of commercial importance pimento berry oil and pimenta leaf oil. The leaf oil finds some use ia perfumery for its resemblance to clove leaf and cinnamon leaf oils as a result of its high content of eugenol. Pimento berry oil is an item of commerce with extensive appHcation by the flavor industry ia food products such as meat sauces, sausages, and pickles, and moderate use ia perfumery, where it is used primarily as a modifier ia the modem spicy types of men s fragrances. The oil is steam-distilled from dried, cmshed, fully grown but unripe fmits. It is a pale yellow Hquid with a warm-spicy, sweet odor with a fresh, clean topnote, a tenacious, sweet-balsamic-spicy body, and a tea-like undertone. A comparative analysis of the headspace volatiles of ripe pimento berries and a commercial oil has been performed and differences are shown ia Table 52 (95). [Pg.337]

Quenching. After solution treatment, the product is generally cooled to room temperature at such a rate to retain essentially all of the solute in solution. The central portions of thicker products caimot be cooled at a sufficient rate to prevent extensive precipitation in some alloys. Moreover, some forgings and castings are dehberately cooled slowly to minimize distortion and residual stress produced by differential cooling in different portions of the products. Cold water, either by immersion or by sprays, is the most commonly used cooling medium. Hot water or a solution of a polymer in cold water is used when the highest rates are not desired. Dilute Al—Mg—Si and Al—Mg—Zn extmsions can be effectively solution heat treated by the extmsion process therefore, they may be quenched at the extmsion press by either air or water. [Pg.123]
