Caveats

Perhaps one of the greater fascinations with the more recent results is precisely the selective cellular and tissue geography of expression of the genes discovered [18, 23, 31]. To date, the HFE gene product has not been demonstrated in lymphocytes ([18], and also Cardoso, de Sousa and Arosa, 1998, (unpublished observations)). This indicates that these cells would only have the classical regulatory pathways described elsewhere in this book to respond to increased serum iron levels (see Chapter 8). [Pg.208]

In the sense that this book may constitute a forum for our joint inspiration, this brief summary of some of the events that can lead to iron overload may prove useful to that effect. [Pg.208]

Work by the authors is funded with grants from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, the Luso-American Foundation (FLAD) and the Amer-ican-Portuguese Biomedical Research Fund (APBRF, USA). [Pg.208]

The numerical illustration given above is so highly idealized that any agreement with experiment could hardly be more than coincidental. A number of caveats have been mentioned, including the inadequacies of theoretical calculations, the various surface distortions and reconstructions expected, surface... [Pg.271]

The corresponding fiinctions i-, Xj etc. then define what are known as the normal coordinates of vibration, and the Hamiltonian can be written in tenns of these in precisely the fonn given by equation (AT 1.69). witli the caveat that each tenn refers not to the coordinates of a single particle, but rather to independent coordinates that involve the collective motion of many particles. An additional distinction is that treatment of the vibrational problem does not involve the complications of antisymmetry associated with identical fennions and the Pauli exclusion prmciple. Products of the nonnal coordinate fiinctions neveitlieless describe all vibrational states of the molecule (both ground and excited) in very much the same way that the product states of single-electron fiinctions describe the electronic states, although it must be emphasized that one model is based on independent motion and the other on collective motion, which are qualitatively very different. Neither model faithfully represents reality, but each serves as an extremely usefiil conceptual model and a basis for more accurate calculations. [Pg.35]

There is one important caveat to consider before one starts to interpret activation volumes in temis of changes of structure and solvation during the reaction the pressure dependence of the rate coefficient may also be caused by transport or dynamic effects, as solvent viscosity, diffiision coefficients and relaxation times may also change with pressure [2]. Examples will be given in subsequent sections. [Pg.841]

Despite these caveats in the application of equation B 1.5.43. one finds that it provides reasonable accuracy in many experimental situations. The SH response for the H/Si system of figure Bl.5.9 for example, is seen to obey the simple linear variation of Xs (A, )with of equation B1.5.43 rather well up to an adsorbate... [Pg.1289]

Lauri G and P A Bartlett 1994. CAVEAT - A Program to Facilitate the Design of Organic Molecules Journal of Computer-Aided Molecular Design 8 51-66. [Pg.739]

This section provides a brief discussion of technical issues pertaining to modeling organic molecules. The bibliography focuses on pertinent review literature. Many computational chemistry methods can be applied to organic molecules. However, there are a few caveats to note as discussed here. [Pg.283]

The article was a complex read for such a simple process. Strike has done Strike s best to interpret this article correctly for you. First off, even though the reaction is fairly simple, the authors have a lot of caveats about the materials needed. Important is the finding that the pH must remain between pH 7-9 or nothing will happen. Next, the granulation of the magnesium was found to be critical as well. Chunky old magnesium turnings were found to... [Pg.117]

These ambiguities eventuady led the Federal Trade Commission to take action ia the case of cedular plastics and to restrict the use of such terminology (3). This action, ia addition to the prohibition placed on the use of certain terminology, requires the use of a caveat whenever the results of burning tests are cited. Much of the older Hterature, however, as wed as some of the more recent pubHcations, use this restricted terminology. [Pg.451]

An inmortant caveat The lines are shown as continuous functions, a considerable oversimplification. Pumps, pipes, valves, and even membrane assemblies come in discrete sizes and capacities, sometimes giving a project cost with a sharper minimum and one displaced from the ideal minimum. Every process has different characteristics, but the general shape of a broad economic minimum is characteristic. [Pg.2028]

Equation (22-106) gives a permeate concentration as a function of the feed concentration at a stage cut, 0 = 0, To calculate permeate composition as a function of 0, the equation may be used iteratively if the permeate is unmixed, such as would apply in a test cell. The calculation for real devices must take into account the fact that the driving force is variable due to changes on both sides of the membrane, as partial pressure is a point function, nowhere constant. Using the same caveat, permeation rates may be calciilated component by component using Eq. (22-98) and permeance values. For any real device, both concentration and permeation require iterative calculations dependent on module geometiy. [Pg.2048]

Although there are a few caveats that need to be noted about these tests, the results suggest strongly that there is no real link between stomach cancer and nitrate in water. Further support for this conclusion comes from the fact that, while nitrate concentrations have been increasing in water during the past 30 years, the incidence of stomach cancer has been declining, and about ten years ago the absence of any link was accepted officially. ... [Pg.3]

Experience gained in the ZAF analysis of major and minor constituents in multielement standards analyzed against pure element standards has produced detailed error distribution histograms for quantitative EPMA. The error distribution is a normal distribution centered about 0%, with a standard deviation of approximately 2% relative. Errors as high as 10% relative are rarely encountered. There are several important caveats that must be observed to achieve errors that can be expected to lie within this distribution ... [Pg.185]

This table is a useful guide but because standards are continually under review and many caveats apply reference should be made to the most recent edition of HSE EH 40 and the AGGIH TLV list for current values and their interpretation. Often carcinogens are not assigned a hygiene standard. [Pg.175]

With these caveats, it is clear that, in general, particle adhesion is governed by physical, rather than chemical, interactions. Therefore, let us turn our attention to understanding the nature of the physical interactions that lead to the adhesion of particles to substrates. [Pg.161]

It is plain from the above review of the literature that agglomeration ean be a very eomplieated phenomenon in whieh eontrary behaviour is often observed, and despite mueh work the theoretieal basis is yet to be fully developed, partieular problems tending to require speeifie solutions. Nevertheless, faeed with a given problem there is some guidanee that ean be offered for systematie study, caveat emptor. [Pg.187]

After these introductory caveats, we review some of the work that has been done in realistic simulations of amphiphilic systems. [Pg.641]

At this point, it may be useful to remind ourselves of an important caveat that is the first principle of kinetics nineties cannot prove a hypothetical mechanism. Kinetic experiments can only rule out various alternative hypotheses because they don t fit the data. However, through thoughtful kinetic studies, a process of elimination of alternative hypotheses leads ever closer to the reality. [Pg.433]

This conclusion must, however, be tempered with two important caveats. Firstly the conclusion is based on a negative experiment the lack of change of the com-... [Pg.99]
