Caustic cleaning

Nickel may enter the wastewater stream from cleanup and minor losses in the hydrogenation process areas caused by nickel catalysts. Caustic cleaning of filter screens from the catalyst are a particularly signihcant source. Often, this problem can be controlled at the source.

The last stage of the process is the final caustic clean, which removes any trace impurity of elements such as antimony, calcium, magnesium, and zinc that may have passed through from the previous processes. The metal is pumped from the de-bismuthizing area to the final kettles where it is held at about 500°C. Caustic soda is added and stirred into the lead for about one hour. Samples are taken at regular intervals to ensure that the product meets the required lead specifications. Once the lead is in specification, it is cast in the required shape and either sold to the market or used internally for production of calcium and antimonial alloys. 

The hydrophilicity of the NH3 plasma-treated PP membranes increased with the increase in plasma treatment time and decreased with the increase in storage time (Yan et al. 2008). The adsorption of BSA on the modified membranes was lower than that on the unmodified-membrane surface and the flux recoveries after water and caustic cleaning for the NH3 plasma-treated membranes for 1 min were 51.1% and 60.7% higher than those for the unmodified membrane. However, the mechanical properties of the membranes decreased after prolonged plasma treatment, thus the optimal plasma treatment time for membrane modification was taken as 1 min. 

On-line sensors are used as part of the CIP system to check aspects such as the concentration and quality of the caustic cleaning fluid. Conductivity metres are fitted within the CIP set itself to evaluate the detergent concentration and control a dosing pump to top up the detergent as required. From an overall automation perspective, all the basic parameters for flow, temperature and time are each controlled and monitored as part of the CIP system. 

Due to their physiological structure, one-way kegs usually neither withstand a hot caustic cleaning or a steam disinfection step. Therefore, sterilization on the filling equipment is not possible, which increases the need for a highly hygienic filling process.
