Catalytic Construction

The catalytic construction of heteroatom-substituted stereocenters has been an important and challenging task in asymmetric synthesis. Various synthetic methods for this issue have been developed. Among them, a-hydroxylation and a-halogena-tion via asymmetric phase-transfer catalytic reactions by cinchona quaternary ammonium salts are described here. [Pg.156]

In the 1960s Air Products began to diversify through acquisitions, purchasing Catalytic Construction Company, a specialized engineering firm focused on gas processing. It moved into chemicals in 1962 with the purchase of Houdry Chemicals and two other small specialty chemicals companies. Then in 1971 it purchased the chemicals and plastics business unit of Air Reduction Company (Airco), a smaller rival. At the same time it acquired a small medical equipment enterprise. [Pg.95]

The only Canadian uranium refinery is operated at Port Hope, Ontario by Eldorado. Tonnage quantities of oxide (U3O3) were produced first in 1942 from ore concentrates. A solvent-extraction pilot plant was operated in 1950 and 1951 to investigate methylisobutylketone (hexone) and then tributylphosphate as extractants for uranium to obtain a high-purity product. The present refinery was designed and built by the Catalytic Construction Company in 1955 (11). Yellow cake is digested in nitric acid, the resultant slurry extracted with tributylphosphate dissolved in kerosene, and the uranium, after purification, transferred back to water. This solution is decomposed thermally to UO3. Capacity is about 5 Gg U/a. [Pg.319]

With models for catalyst decay and effectiveness now in hand, the simulation of lignin liquefaction could be achieved given the initial lignin structure (as described earlier) and model compound reaction pathways and kinetics, both thermal and catalytic. Construction of a random polymer, as outlined earlier, began the simulation. This structural information combined with the simulated process conditions to allow calculation of the reaction rate constants, selectivities and associated transition probabilities. The largest rate constant then specified the upper limit of the reaction time step size. [Pg.249]

The complete assembly for carrying out the catalytic decomposition of acids into ketones is shown in Fig. Ill, 72, 1. The main part of the apparatus consists of a device for dropping the acid at constant rate into a combustion tube containing the catalyst (manganous oxide deposited upon pumice) and heated electrically to about 350° the reaction products are condensed by a double surface condenser and coUected in a flask (which may be cooled in ice, if necessary) a glass bubbler at the end of the apparatus indicates the rate of decomposition (evolution of carbon dioxide). The furnace may be a commercial cylindrical furnace, about 70 cm. in length, but it is excellent practice, and certainly very much cheaper, to construct it from simple materials. [Pg.338]

Product Quality Considerations of product quahty may require low holdup time and low-temperature operation to avoid thermal degradation. The low holdup time eliminates some types of evaporators, and some types are also eliminated because of poor heat-transfer charac teristics at low temperature. Product quality may also dic tate special materials of construction to avoid met hc contamination or a catalytic effect on decomposition of the product. Corrosion may also influence evaporator selection, since the advantages of evaporators having high heat-transfer coefficients are more apparent when expensive materials of construction are indicated. Corrosion and erosion are frequently more severe in evaporators than in other types of equipment because of the high hquid and vapor velocities used, the frequent presence of sohds in suspension, and the necessary concentration differences. [Pg.1138]

All criteria proposed here are constructed such that if absolutely no gradient of a particular type exists, then the value of the corresponding criterion is zero. For fast catalytic processes this is not reasonable to expect and therefore a value judgment must be made for how much deviation from zero can be ignored. For the dimensionless expressions the Damkdhler numbers are used as these are applied to each particular condition. The approach is that the Damkdhler numbers can be calculated from known system values, which are related to the unknown driving forces for the transport processes. [Pg.74]

Other polymers can be more troublesome. Poly(vinyl chloride) requires the incorporation of stabilisers and even so may discolour and give off hydrochloric acid, the latter having a corrosive effect on many metals. At the same time some metals have a catalytic effect on this polymer so that care has to be taken in the construction of barrels, screws and other metal parts liable to come into contact with the polymer. [Pg.163]

An old variation of the conversion type is a catalytic combination unit. Development of this scheme was necessitated by the rising cost of refinery construction after World War II and by the great demand for capital for postwar expansion. The scheme reduced the investment and operating costs for refining equipment. The basic feature of the combination unit lies in the integration of the fractionation facilities of the reduced crude distillation and catalytic cracking sections. [Pg.220]

Various companies worked on the development of Fluid catalytic cracking units. During World War II, the government requested some of the leaders in this field to pool their knowledge so as to speed the production of aviation gasoline. The fact that so many Fluid units were constructed and put into operation in such a short time shows that this joint effort was successful. However, because of this effort, many of the basic Fluid patents were held for many years in combination with other companies, some of which also developed their own Fluid designs. [Pg.24]

H )-Euranones are useful building blocks in the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds. In addition, they often serve as valuable synthetic intermediates in the stereoselective construction of substituted y-butyrolactones via conjugated addition to the Q ,/3-unsaturated carbonyl moiety or catalytic hydrogenation of the double bond (88JOC1560). [Pg.127]
