Texturing. The final step in olefin fiber production is texturing the method depends primarily on the appHcation. For carpet and upholstery, the fiber is usually bulked, a procedure in which fiber is deformed by hot air or steam jet turbulence in a no22le and deposited on a moving screen to cool. The fiber takes on a three-dimensional crimp that aids in developing bulk and coverage in the final fabric. Stuffer box crimping, a process in which heated tow is overfed into a restricted oudet box, imparts a two-dimensional sawtooth crimp commonly found in olefin staple used in carded nonwovens and upholstery yams. 

Traditional appHcations for latices are adhesives, binders for fibers and particulate matter, protective and decorative coatings (qv), dipped goods, foam, paper coatings, backings for carpet and upholstery, modifiers for bitumens and concrete, and thread and textile modifiers. More recent appHcations include biomedical appHcations as protein immobilizers, visual detectors in immunoassays (qv), as release agents, in electronic appHcations as photoresists for circuit boards, in batteries (qv), conductive paint, copy machines, and as key components in molecular electronic devices.

Modified Cross Sections. Nylon filaments are spun in a variety of cross-section shapes that include the conventional round to irregular solid and hollow shapes (Fig. 13). The cross-section shape is an important variant in designing the functionality and luster of fibers. The round cross section is used for strength in industrial applications and for subdued luster in apparel and upholstery. The multilobal cross sections are used to enhance bulk and for bright luster in both BCF and spun staple yams for carpets and upholstery. The grooves in the multilobal shapes also enhance moisture transport by wicking water through capillary action. Flat-sided ribbon-like cross sections provide cover in apparel applications. 

Polypropylenes are available as molding powder, extruded sheet, cast film, textile staple, and continuous-filament yarn. They find use in packaging film molded parts for automobiles, appliances, and housewares wire and cable coating food container closures bottles, printing plates carpet and upholstery fibers storage battery cases crates for soft-drink bottles laboratory ware trays fish nets surgical casts and a variety of other applications.

These are all hard-surface cleaners. There are two types included in the general household cleaners that are, however, used on soft (fabric) surfaces. These are carpet and upholstery cleaners. Although these are not technically hard-surface cleaners, they are covered briefly.
