Carpet backing compounds

H-36 is a coarse, mechanically ground alumina trihydrate used to suppress flame and smoke in latex, vinyl and urethane carpet-backing compounds. 

Floor mats, carpet backing, and reHef mats have been traditional markets for ground mbber where the material adds resHiency at a lower cost compared to virgin compounds. Certain molded products have also been markets for ground mbber. An interesting use is the manufacture of lawn soaker... 

Natural mbber latex is also used in adhesives for tape, packaging, envelopes, and in the footwear industry. It is used in the carpet industry as a binder for backing compounds, but this is another area in which synthetic SBR latex has competed effectively. There are a number of relatively small and specialized appHcations for natural mbber latex including mbberized coir or hair and cast products such as toys. Latex sheeting which is used in dental dams and for numerous other purposes can be made by dipping or casting onto a continuous belt.

The curing is carried out either freely using hot or steam or in a mold that is only partially filled with the molding compound. Synthetic rubbers, particularly SBR, are preferred as they allow precise control over level of viscosity required for obtaining consistent product quality. The sponge and expanded rubber products include carpet backing, sheets, profiles, and molding. 

ATH came into wide use as a flame retardant in the 1960s, primarily as a result of demands of consumer-driven safety legislation for carpet backing and fiberglass-reinforced polyester products. For these applications, ATH imparts flame retardance and smoke suppression. End-use markets for ATH include transportation, construction, cast polymers, electrical/electronic, wire and cable, leisure and appliances. Specific polymer applications range from thermosets such as solid surface, sheet molding compounds (SMCs) and bulk molding compounds (BMCs) to wire and... 

Molybdenum compounds. Molybdenum compounds include such products as molybdic oxide or ammonium and metal molybdates and are used in PVC and carpet backings. These products are good smoke suppressants and have been looked at as replacements for antimony oxides.
