Another characteristic similar to A/ 100 is the Distribution Octane Number (DON) proposed by Mobil Corporation and described in ASTM 2886. The idea is to measure the heaviest fractions of the fuel at the inlet manifold to the CFR engine. For this method the CFR has a cooled separation chamber placed between the carburetor and the inlet manifold. Some of the less volatile components are separated and collected in the chamber. This procedure is probably the most realistic but less discriminating than that of the AJ 100 likewise, it is now only of historical interest. [Pg.200]

In 1981, the Dutch company TNO in cooperation with the New Zealand government converted a gasoline engine to a flexible fuel vehicle by adding a fuel sensor. The sensor deterrnined the amount of oxygen in the fuel and then used this information to mechanically adjust the carburetor jets. [Pg.426]

Parts made from fluoroelastomers ate used ia appHcations that justify their high cost, usually where the maintenance and replacement costs are high enough to offset the initial cost of the part. These mixed phosphate ester titanium complexes or their amine salts are useful as fuel additives to help maintain cleanliness of carburetors and inhibit surface corrosion. Chloride-free mixed alcohol phosphate esters can be obtained if a tetraalkyl titanate is used (101). [Pg.147]

Emission factors must be also critically examined to determine the tests from which they were obtained. For example, carbon monoxide from an automobile will vary with the load, engine speed, displacement, ambient temperature, coolant temperature, ignition timing, carburetor adjustment, engine condition, etc. However, in order to evaluate the overall emission of carbon monoxide to an area, we must settle on an average value that we can multiply by the number of cars, or kilometers driven per year, to determine the total carbon monoxide released to the area. [Pg.94]

Evaporative emissions from the fuel tank and carburetor have been controlled on all 1971 and later model automobiles sold in the United States. This has been accomplished by either a vapor recovery system which uses the crankcase of the engine for the storage of the hydrocarbon vapors or an adsorption and regeneration system using a canister of activated carbon to trap the vapors and hold them until such time as a fresh air purge through the canister carries the vapors to the induction system for burning in the combustion chamber. [Pg.524]
