Samples of sand spiked with 36 nitroaromatic compounds, 19 haloethers, and 42 organochlorine pesticides, and a standard reference soil (certified for 13 polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, dibenzofuran, and pentachlorophenol) were extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide in a two- or four-vessel supercritical fluid extractor to establish the efficiency of the extraction and the degree of agreement of the parallel extraction recoveries. Furthermore, the many variables that influence the extraction process (e.g., flowrate, pressure, temperature, moisture content, cell volume, sample size, extraction time, modifier type, modifier volume, static versus dynamic extraction, volume of solvent in the collection vessel, and the use of glass beads to fill the void volume) were investigated. [Pg.182]

Activated carbon modified chemically with potassium hydroxide via low temperature wet impregnation method for NOx adsorption was used. The present study examined adsorption and desorption behaviors and the accompanied surface chemistry. In particular, typical desorption behavior was examined after NOx was adsorbed at 100°C while the temperature was increased up to 600°C. This study found that the presence of a relatively larger amount of adsorbent delays surface oxidation. NOx has become oxidized while inducing three types of physical and chemical bonds on the surface of BHAC. The results concerning the surface properties after adsorption and desorption were analyzed using various instruments. Potassium existed on the surface without consumption as K-IAC was adsorbed by potassium oxide after desorption. [Pg.579]

Since the past decade, different types of sensors and biosensors based on SPE have been prepared in our laboratory, such as a choline sensor with choline oxidase immobilized on the surface of a ruthenized-carbon screen-printed electrode as part of a system for pesticide detection [25], a screen-printed ruthenium dioxide electrode for pFI measurements [26], carbon-modified electrodes with mercury for heavy metals analysis [27], and two kinds of disposable electrochemical DNA biosensors for environmental screening [8-10,15,28,29]. [Pg.253]

The negative C-AQ electrode also manifests a significant increase in capacitance to 367 F/g at the potential of about -0.05 V as compared to a nonmodified ACC electrode. Figure 28.8 and b presents dependencies of energy and power densities on current for two ECSCs a nonmodified C-C type capacitor and modified type C-AQ/C-DHB ECSC. As we see, PsC of type C-AQ/C-DHB provides approximately a twice higher value of energy density as compared to a nonmodified carbon capacitor. However, the values of power density for both ECSC types are close and depend on their compression degree. [Pg.334]

High strength carbon fibers (Type II) are much more abrasive than the high modulus (Type I) variety [74]. Carbon-carbon composites have high compressive strengths and stiffnesses and friction and wear properties can be modified by the introduction of additives [75]. [Pg.79]

Two ways in which the Type I plasticizer can modify the of a polymer chain are by shortening the polymer chain length and by partially dissolving the polymer chain. Both of these mechanisms accomplish the same result, making the tape more flexible at a given temperature. As the becomes lower, often well below room temperature, the polymer chain is better able to stretch or reorient itself without fracturing. An example of polymer chain shortening is seen in the case of polypropylene carbonate modified by propylene car-... [Pg.51]

This electron transfer was positively affected by the immobilization of glucose oxidase on glassy carbon modified by aminophenyl boronic acid [193] or adsorption on to metalized carbons [194]. Nevertheless, it was possible to achieve good electron transfer only by modification ( functionalization ) of the enzyme with redox compounds (ferrocene derivatives). The direct electrical communication between the modified enzyme and an electrode has been proved by cyclic voltammetry. Thus attention was paid to the construction of various types of modified glucose oxidase electrodes. For instance, Benneto et al. [195] describe an... [Pg.406]

The adsorption isotherms are often Langmuirian in type (under conditions such that multilayer formation is not likely), and in the case of zeolites, both n and b vary with the cation present. At higher pressures, capillary condensation typically occurs, as discussed in the next section. Some N2 isotherms for M41S materials are shown in Fig. XVII-27 they are Langmuirian below P/P of about 0.2. In the case of a microporous carbon (prepared by carbonizing olive pits), the isotherms for He at 4.2 K and for N2 at 77 K were similar and Langmuirlike up to P/P near unity, but were fit to a modified Dubninin-Radushkevich (DR) equation (see Eq. XVII-75) to estimate micropore sizes around 40 A [186]. [Pg.663]

Equipment. A typical commercial quartz-growing autoclave is Hlustrated in Figure 1. The material of constmction for use at 17 MPa (25,000 psi) and 400°C can be a low carbon steel, such as 4140, or various types of low aHoy steel. The closure, a modified Bridgeman closure, is based on the unsupported area principle (12). That is, the pressure in the vessel is transmitted through the plunger to the steel surfaces which initially are nearly line contacts. Thus, the pressure in the seal surface gready exceeds the pressure in the vessel because most of the area of the plunger is unsupported. Hydrothermal equipment has been further discussed (10). [Pg.519]

Another approach has been adopted by the Du Pont Company with Adiprene C. This is a urethane-type polymer with unsaturated groups in the polymer. Because of the unsaturation the polymer may be vulcanised with sulphur, the standard vulcanising agent of the rubber industry. This is a clear-cut example of a product being modified to suit the processor rather than that of a processor adapting himself to meet new products. Whereas Adiprene C has poor tensile strength when unfilled, the use of carbon black leads to appreciable reinforcement (as is the case with SBR and to some extent natural rubber. [Pg.788]
