Carbon fiber components , aerospace applications

A review (16) and a book (17) on the chemistry and properties of poly(ether ketones) have been published. PEEK is present in the market also in reinforced grades (glass or carbon fibers) as well as in yams or in powder for coatings. Fibers are marketed by ICI imder the trade name Zyex. PEEK found application in the transport, teletronics, and aerospace sectors, with the fabrication of injection-molded engineering components and circuit boards. PEEK materials have also foimd a place in medical technologies. For this purpose, their biological and toxicological safety has been certified (14). 

In the aerospace industry, resinous polymers encompass a wide variety of hardware applications for aircraft, missiles, and space structures. In aircraft, resins are used as a matrix material for primary (flight-dependent) and secondary fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) structures, adhesives for the bonding of metal and composite hardware components, electronic circuit board materials, sealants, and radomes. Missile applications include equipment sections, motor cases, nose cones, cartjon-carbon composites for engine nozzles, adhesive bonding, and electronics. As the exploration of outer space intensifies, applications will become even more exotic. FRC will be used to construct telescopes, antennas, satellites, and eventually housing and other platform structures where special properties such as weight, stiffness, and dimensional stability are important.
