A few years later carbon dioxide was injected into an underground tank containing Jet fuel as a tryout of a fire-fighting system. The tank blew up, killing 18 people who were standing on top of the tank. In this case the discharge may have occurred from the cloud of carbon dioxide particles. 

If the products of combustion can be diluted so that the carbon dioxide content is not greater than 1 per cent it is permissible to discharge them at ground level. It is known that runaway reactions nearly always result in two-phase flow reliefs.4 The two phases discharge through the relief system similar to a champagne and carbon dioxide mixture exiting a freshly opened bottle. If the champagne is heated before opening, the entire contents of the bottle may be relieved. This result has also been verified for runaway reactions in the chemical industry. 

ECO Purification Systems USA, Inc. (EPS) has patented the ECOCHOICE process. This technology uses catalytic oxidation to destroy dissolved organic contaminants in a fixed-bed reactor. Ozone and the polluted water pass through the reactor where the organic contaminants are oxidized to form carbon dioxide and water. Clean water is discharged, and residual ozone is recycled or destroyed within the treatment system. 

To produce pure hydrogen, the carbon dioxide must be removed. The gas passes through a carbon dioxide removal system, which contains a chemical solvent that selectively absorbs the carbon dioxide as the gas passes through the solvent.12 Heat then is added to the solvent to discharge the carbon dioxide. The regenerated solvent is returned to the system to continue the removal of carbon dioxide.
