Three-piece cans

The first consideration for the formulator must be the application technique to be used, and the substrate to be applied. This will determine the resin chemistry, and the physical specifications of the formulation. All two piece beverage can fabricators currently use airless spray techniques of application of internal lacquer, whilst the three piece food can industry use roller coated sheet or coil to fabricate fo cans. Three piece beverage cans, still used in some parts of the World, use roller coated sheet or coil. Some non-carbonated dinks, (such as fruit juices) which are particularly popular in the Far East, are not suitable for packing in DWI cans, because they are not pressurised, thus three piece cans have to be used. [Pg.438]

For symmetric top species, Pave hes along the symmetry axis of the molecule, so the orientation of Pave can again be described in terms of 0 and (j), the angles used to locate the orientation of the molecule s symmetry axis relative to the lab-fixed coordinate system. As a result, the El integral again can be decomposed into three pieces ... [Pg.401]

Steel. The steel container s most usual form is cylindrical with a concave (or flat) bottom and a convex top dome with a circular opening finished to receive a valve with a standard 2.54-cm opening. The three pieces (body, bottom, and top) are produced separately and joined by high speed manufacturing. The size of the container is described by its diameter and height to top seam, in that order. Hence a 202 x 509 container is 54.0 mm (2 /jg in.) in diameter by 141.3 mm (5 /jg in.) high. Tables of available sizes and overflow volumes and suggested fill levels can be readily obtained from manufacturers. [Pg.349]

Sepro Conta.iner, The Sepro container consists of a collapsible plastic bag fitted into a standard three-piece, tin-plated container such as a 202 X 214, 202 x 406, or 202 x 509 can. The product is placed within the bag, and the propellant is added through the bottom of the container, which is fitted with a one-way valve. There is no limitation on the viscosity of the product but compatibiUty with the plastic bag must be considered. A free-dowing hquid can be dispensed either as a stream or a fine spray, depending on the type of valve employed. A viscous material is often dispensed as a stream. This system has been used for caulking compounds, postfoaming gels, and depilatories. [Pg.351]

Three-Piece Cans. Most steel cans, whether or not tin-plated, are three-piece, ie, a body and two ends. In the past, solder was used to bond the longitudinal seam, but solder has been replaced by welded side seams. [Pg.450]

Types of internal enamel for food containers include oleoresins, vinyl, acryflc, phenoHc, and epoxy—phenoHc. Historically can lacquers were based on oleoresinous products. PhenoHc resins have limited flexibiHty and high bake requirements, but are used on three-piece cans where flexibiHty is not required. Vinyl coatings are based on copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate dissolved in ketonic solvents. These can be blended with alkyd, epoxy, and phenoHc resins to enhance performance. FlexibiHty allows them to be used for caps and closures as weU as drawn cans. Their principal disadvantage is high sensitivity to heat and retorting processes this restricts their appHcation to cans which are hot filled, and to beer and beverage products. [Pg.450]

What defines the constitution of an alloy If you can t remember, refer back to the definition on p. 311 and revise. The phase diagram gives all three pieces of information. The first you know already. This section explains how to get the other two. [Pg.336]

A hnal application of bend and polish may be applied to new telescopes with hundreds of segments. Plane mirrors are economically made using a continuous polisher, or CP machine. The machine consists of an annulus of pitch about 2.5 times the diameter of the maximum size workpiece to be polished. The work is placed face down on the pitch and constrained from rotating with the pitch annulus by rollers touching the edge of the work. A large flat mirror can be fully polished out in one eight hour shift and the machine holds three pieces at a time (Kodak-CP). [Pg.95]

Fig. 6.5 Power curves this is an illustrative method of defining fhe number of subjects required in a given study. In practice, the actual number would be calculated from standard equations. In this example, the curves are constructed for 16, 40,100 and 250 subjects per group in a two-limb comparative trial. These graphs can give three pieces of information the number of subjects that needs to be studied, given the power of the trial and the difference expected between the two treatments the power of a trial, given the number of subjects included and the difference expected the difference that can be detected between two groups of subjects of given number, with varying degrees of power. Put on your safety glasses. To make a rocket, fill a film canister about / full of water. Place the canister in the center of the pie pan. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into three piece of about equal size. Drop one of the pieces into the canister, snap on its top, and quickly invert the canister so its top is resting on the pie pan. Step back and wait. The pressure inside the canister increases due to the accumulation of carbon dioxide gas inside it. This pressure builds up until the canister body suddenly explodes from the pie pan launching pad. If the top of the canister is quickly replaced and the canister repositioned, another blast can occur. In fact, several blast-offs can be obtained with one Alka-Seltzer tablet. [Pg.324]

Take two test tubes, put two or three pieces of zinc into one of them and the same amount of tin into the other. Pour 5 ml of a 2 % nitric acid solution into each of the tubes and keep them for your next lesson. How can you determine that ammonium salts formed under these conditions Write the equations of the reactions. What properties of nitric acid do the experiments performed indicate ... [Pg.134]

The sequences of all three pieces of RNA in the E. coli ribosomes are known as are those from many other species. These include eukaryotic mitochondrial, plas-tid, and cytosolic rRNA. From the sequences alone, it was clear that these long molecules could fold into a complex series of hairpin loops resembling those in tRNA. For example, the 16S rRNA of E. coli can fold as in Fig. 29-2A and eukaryotic 18S RNA in a similar way (Fig. 29-4).38/39/67 69 The actual secondary structures of 16S and 18S RNAs, within the folded molecules revealed by X-ray crystallography, are very similar to that shown in Fig. 29-2A. Ribosomal RNAs undergo many posttranscriptional alterations. Methylation of 2 -hydroxyls and of the nucleic acid bases as well as conversion to pseudouridines (pp. 1638-1641) predominate over 200 modifications, principally in functionally important locations that have been found in human rRNA.69a... [Pg.1673]

Document 55 is composed of two copies of a single page of the Samoa Weekly Herald printed on tapa, and dated March 3, 1900. One page is in three pieces (A, B, C) and the second page is complete. There are additional copies of this newspaper in the collections which are in excellent condition. As a consequence, these pieces have been given to the conservation department for the purpose of developing mounting techniques for tapa which can be applied to masi kesa (painted tapa) in the collections. [Pg.179]

The transcribed mRNA is bound by a particle called a ribosome. Ribosomes are huge complexes consisting of fifty-two separate proteins (of which several are present in multiple copies) and three pieces of RNA with lengths of 120,1,542, and 2,904 nucleotides. The ribosome can be readily broken down into two large pieces, called the 30S sub-unit and the 50S subunit.6 Incredibly, the ribosome is self-assembling. Experiments have shown that when ribosomes are separated into their components and then remixed, under the right conditions the components will spontaneously reform ribosomes. [Pg.291]

Answer The reaction rate can be measured by following the decrease in absorption at 340 nm (as NADH is converted to NAD+) as the reaction proceeds. The researcher needs to obtain three pieces of information to develop a good quantitative assay for lactate dehydrogenase ... [Pg.65]

Acetylene is listed as one of the starting materials, and we have good methods (Section 9-7) for making carbon-carbon bonds next to triple bonds, by using acetylide ions as nucleophiles. We can break the target structure into three pieces, each containing no more than four carbon atoms. [Pg.416]

Cans may either be three piece consisting of a body made up of a welded cylinder with one end seamed in place which is then closed with a second end, or two piece consisting of a body formed from a single piece of metal closed with an end (see Fig. 11.1). Aluminium cans are always two piece whereas steel cans may be either three piece or two piece . The end or ends are seamed onto the can body which involves the forming of a double seam of folded metal (see Fig. 11.2). A hermetic seal (a key element of metal food and beverage packaging) is ensured by the incorporation of a... [Pg.252]
