For most of the decade prior to 1965, the United States was the world s largest single producer of potash. More than 90% of this production came from mines in New Mexico. As the grades of these deposits lowered and production costs rose, expanding production in Saskatchewan, Canada,... [Pg.231]

The lignite deposits of North Dakota and Montana extend into Canada as far as Saskatchewan. Canadian deposits are also located in Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Ontario, and Manitoba. Production by open-cast mining, ca3.5 x 10 t in 1975, was 10.8 x 10 t in 1989. [Pg.154]

Unconformity-Related Deposits. Deposits of the unconformity-related type occur spatially close to significant unconformities. These deposits usually developed during the period about 1800—800 million years ago in intracratonic basins. Deposits also developed during Phanerozoic time. Examples of unconformity-related deposits include the ore bodies at Cluff Lake, Key Lake, and Rabbit Lake in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, and those in the Alligator Rivers area in northern AustraHa (12). [Pg.184]

Uranium is found in most rock, in a concentration of two to four parts per million (ppm). Substantially greater average concentrations can be found in mineral deposits, as high as 10,000 ppm, or 10 percent. Most uranium deposits suitable for mining, however, contain an average of less than 1 percent uranium. Uranium is a metal, and thus its acquisition is not unlike the mining of any other metallic ore. Although uranium is found nearly eveiywhere on the earth, Canada leads the world in uranium production, mostly due to its heavy financial investment m uranium exploration, and to a few sizable deposits in the Saskatchewan territoiy. Table 1 depicts the total world uranium production in 1997. [Pg.866]
