Synthetic hydrotalcites employed in plastics applications are finely divided, free-flotving, odorless, amorphous powders. For polyolefin applications, hydrotalcites with an average particle size of 0.5 (tm and a specific surface area ofless than 20 m /g (BETmethod) are recommended. Their density varies around 2.1 g/cm depending on the composition. Sodium, zinc, and calcium stearate-coated hydrotalcites are available, which show enhanced compatibility with polyolefins [13]. Calcium carbonate is the most commonly used extender. It is widely available and low in cost, and it provides for improvements in certain performance properties. The material is a mineral that is mined throughout the world. Common forms of calcium carbonate include limestone, marble, calcite, chalk, and dolomite. It is manufactured by precipitation processes and is commercially available from a number of sources. Calcium carbonate is available in many different particle sizes and in various grades. To improve dispersion in certain resins, the filler is often coated with calcium stearate or stearic acid. [Pg.160]

The primary particle size of Winnofil stearate coated precipitated calcium carbonate from Zeneca Resins is in the region of 0.075 micron. When compounded into natural and synthetic elastomers, the hydrophobic surface coating assists wetting and aids dispersion. When compounded into plasticised PVC for cable sheathing, the PCC allows for formulations with minimal potential for acid gas release in combustion conditions. Figure 8.32 shows the effect of filler type and concentration on the mode of fracture. Several factors are responsible for the behavior. CaT (calcium terephthalate) fillers have good adhesion to the matrix and have an elongated shape. CaCOs (1) and (2) are both untreated fillers of smaller particle sizes (2.2 and 4.1 (dm, respectively). CaCO (3) is a stearate coated filler (better dispersion, but poor adhesion to matrix) with a particle size of 6.1 im.
