Calcium demonstration

Electron microscopic examination of nuclei prepared in 0.25 M sucrose in the presence of calcium demonstrates clumping of the intranuclear structures. Clumping should warn investigators of the possibility of agglomeration of cytoplasmic material. It is also believed that the effect of DNase on nuclear oxidative phosphorylation constitutes a reliable method of distinguishing nuclear and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Although this conclusion is probably justified, it can be substantiated only by adequate control studies of the effect of DNase on the oxidative phosphorylation of cytoplasmic particles. [Pg.81]

Other patents (81,82) coveted the preparation of cellulose solutions using NMMO and speculated about their use as dialysis membranes, food casings (sausage skins), fibers, films, paper coatings, and nonwoven binders. NMMO emerged as the best of the amine oxides, and its commercial potential was demonstrated by American Enka (83,84). Acetylene traditionally has been made from coal (coke) via the calcium carbide process. However, laboratory and bench-scale experiments have demonstrated the technical feasibiUty of producing the acetylene by the direct pyrolysis of coal. Researchers in Great Britain (24,28), India (25), and Japan (27) reported appreciable yields of acetylene from the pyrolysis of coal in a hydrogen-enhanced argon plasma. A unique problem arises when reducing the fissile isotope The amount of that can be reduced is limited by its critical mass. In these cases, where the charge must be kept relatively small, calcium becomes the preferred reductant, and iodine is often used as a reaction booster. This method was introduced by Baker in 1946 (54). Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory have recently introduced a laser-initiated modification to this reduction process that offers several advantages (55). A carbon dioxide laser is used to initiate the reaction between UF and calcium metal. This new method does not requite induction heating in a closed bomb, nor does it utilize iodine as a booster. This promising technology has been demonstrated on a 200 g scale. [Pg.321]

Interaction of vitamin D and its metaboUtes with sex hormones has been demonstrated, particularly ia birds ia which the egg-laying functions combine calcium needs and reproductive activity. In the treatment of hypertension, ACE inhibitors are as effective as diuretics, (3-adrenoceptor antagonists, or calcium channel blockers in lowering blood pressure. However, increased survival rates have only been demonstrated for diuretics and (3-adrenoceptor antagonists. ACE inhibitors are approved for monotherapy as well as for combinational regimes. Of course, this argument is perfectly true where it can be positively demonstrated that MU water requirements really are very low. Once again however, if this is not the case, then—most treatment programs are designed primarily for corrosion control and do not compensate for undue hardness entering the boiler—calcium carbonate scale can and does develop over time.
