Cabbages harvesting

The harvesting operation is heavily mechanized for both commodities, so in this study human subjects are best described as either drivers or crew. Only one cabbage harvester registered any exposure, and that was limited to Systox on one chest patch for a crewman who stood on a platform and culled out small or rotten heads with a pitch fork. Cabbages were harvested from mineral soil fields in our study and there was little airborne dust during the operations. [Pg.308]

Some vegetables, such as cabbages, carrots, cauliflowers, leeks, lettuces, onions, and peas, have a range of cultivars for different seasons some can even be available to harvest all year, depending on the severity of your climate. Cultivars described as "quick" or "early" are especially useful at both the beginning and the end of the growing season, as they produce a crop more quickly than main crops. Others have been bred to tolerate cold conditions. [Pg.229]

Clean cuts A small, sharp garden knife is the ideal tool for making clean cuts when harvesting from left) zucchini, globe artichokes, and cabbage. [Pg.268]

Sow under fleece or ultra-fine mesh. Some crops can be uncovered once established Chinese cabbage, radish, and arugula may need to be covered until harvest time. [Pg.329]

For up to 20-30% trimming losses, vegetables such as cabbage, celery, Chinese cabbage, and leeks retain an identity closely related to the freshly harvested... [Pg.103]

Early summer cabbage (Primo) is sold as whole heads. They are produced from overwintered crops or spring planted crops and harvested from May. [Pg.409]

Early summer cabbage can be autunm drilled and overwintered, drilled in Febmary or transplanted April/May at a final spacing of 46x23 cm for harvesting from May. Plastic covers can be used on early crops which advance harvests by up to two weeks. [Pg.410]

Summer cabbage is drilled in March/April or transplanted May/June, at a spacing of 46 x 23-46 cm, for harvesting July to October. [Pg.410]

Winter cabbage varieties are drilled/transplanted in May/eaily June for harvesting from mid-November onwards. The target spacing is 46 x 23-46 cm. [Pg.410]

The tops of the plant, which resembles a small open hearted cabbage can be removed and sold in October and November. The major part of the crop is machine harvested, usually beginning in August and extending until March, according to the variety and season. Occasionally, the earliest maturing varieties are picked over by hand before the whole plant is cut for stripping. Where hand harvested,... [Pg.417]
