C -Globulin

The immune globulins and antivenins are administered cautiously during pregnancy (Pregnancy Category C) and lactation and in children.

Managing viral hepatitis involves both prevention and treatment. Prevention of hepatitis A and B (and indirectly for hepatitis D) can be achieved with immune globulin or vaccines. There is no specific pharmacologic treatment for acute viral hepatitis A, B, C, D, or E only supportive care is available. Individuals with mild to moderate symptoms rarely require hospitalization. Occasionally, hospitalization is required in individuals experiencing significant nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and encephalopathy. Liver transplantation may be required in rare instances if fulminant hepatitis develops.

C5a is inactivated by the myeloperoxidase-H202 system, which oxidises a methionine residue (Met 70) on the molecule group A streptococcal endo-proteinases also abolish chemotactic activity of C5a and related compounds. Neutrophil lysosomal enzymes (e.g. elastase and cathepsin G) also destroy C5a chemotactic activity, but as these proteases are inhibited by the serum antiproteinases, a -antiproteinase and a2-macroglobulin, the physiological role of neutrophilic proteases in the inactivation of C5a is questionable. Two chemotactic factor inactivators have been found in human serum an a-globulin that specifically and irreversibly inactivates C5-derived chemotactic factors, and a / -globulin that inactivates bacterial chemotactic factors. These activities are heat labile (destroyed by treatment at 56 °C for 30 min) and are distinct from those attributable to anaphylatoxin inactivator. An apparently specific inhibitor of C5-derived chemotactic activity has also been described in human synovial fluid and peritoneal fluid. This factor (molecular mass of 40 kDa) is heat stable and acts directly on C5a.

Early ultracentrifuges were extremely expensive and were therefore located in only a small number of laboratories. Nevertheless, rapid strides were made in the theory and practice of ultracentrifugation. By 1940 the behavior of proteins with molecular weights ranging from that of cytochrome c (13.4 kDa) to serum globulin (ca.170 kDa) had been studied. 

Many of the globulins act as transport proteins. Of particular interest are those proteins which are combined with lipids, themselves synthesized in the liver, to form lipoprotein complexes. High density lipoprotein (HDL), which contains predominantly apoproteins A and C combined with mainly phospholipids (most of the cholesterol found in mature HDL is added later) and very low density lipoprotein...
