Corticosteroid binding globulin

This structure encoding method has been applied both for the classification of a data set comprising 31 corticosteroids, for which affinity data were available in the literature, binding to the corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) receptor, and for the simulation of infrared spectra [28, 29).

Steroids reversibly bind with two proteins in the plasma corticosteroid-binding globulin, which is a specific a2-globulin and albumin, which has nonspecific activity and a weakly expressed affinity to steroids. 

Kanter et al. reported an increase concentration of the corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG) (Kanter et al. 2001). Most cortisol is bound to CBG, and is biologically inactive. A greater concentration of CBG is consistent with low levels of measurable free cortisol, and provides a putative explanation for how cortisol levels could be measurably low even though other aspects of HPA axis functioning do not seem hypoactive. However, the extent to which CBG levels are a contributing cause of low cortisol requires further examination. 

It does not bind to intracellular estrogen receptors, but it does bind to sex hormone-binding and corticosteroid-binding globulins. It inhibits P450scc (the cholesterol side chain-cleaving enzyme),...

The steroid hormones are hydrophobic, this property enabling them to readily cross the plasma membrane to bind their respective cytosolic receptors. However, transport of such hydrophobic hormones through the blood stream requires hormone-binding proteins such as the steroid-binding globulins and corticosteroid-binding globulins.
