Representative diene-based polymers include natural rubber (NR), polyisoprene (PIP), PBD, styrene—butadiene rubber (SBR), and acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), which together compose a key class of polymers widely used in the rubber industry. Butadiene, a major commodity chemical used in the production of synthetic rubber, is listed as one of 189 hazardous air pollutants under the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. Butadiene is a carcinogen in rats and mice, with mice being substantially more sensitive than rats. The extent to which butadiene poses risk of cancer to humans exposed to this chemical is uncertain. Effect of Molecular Configuration of Elastomer. The extent of the impact and strength improvements of ERL-4221 depends on the chemical structure and composition of the elastomer modifier. The data shown in Table I indicate that the carboxyl terminated 80-20 butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer (CTBN) is the most effective toughening and reinforcing agent. The mercaptan terminated copolymer (MTBN) is considerably less effective as far as tensile strength and heat distortion temperature are concerned. The mercaptan groups are considerably less reactive with epoxides than carboxyls (4), and this difference in the rate of reaction may influence the extent of the epoxy-elastomer copolymerization and therefore the precipitation of the rubber as distinct particles. [Pg.555]

Many authors elucidated functionalization of polymers containing reactive oxirane moieties. Epoxidized NR, BR, IR and/or the respective model hydrocarbons, poly (butadiene-co-isoprene, various epoxy resins, poly (2,3-epoxypro-pyl methacrylate) and its copolymers or grafted systems were mostly exploited. Stabilizers based on epoxidized unsaturated rubbers are of the top interest. The mechanism of the functionalization process was studied in details by means of 3,4-epoxy-4-methylheptane and 1,2-epoxy-3-ethyl-2-methylpentane as model compounds [289]. The ring opening of the asymmetric oxirane is regiospecific. Aliphatic primary amines attack the least substituted carbon atom and can be involved in crosslink formation. Aromatic primary and secondary amines are less reactive than aliphatic ones because of their lower basicity the attack on the least substituted carbon atom is however preferred too. [Pg.136]

One can rationalize a need for small rubber inclusions in some of the newer approaches to waterborne and high solids epoxy coating systems. Water-thinned epoxy coating compositions are described (48) where the two-component system consists of a nitrile rubber modified epoxy resin in the epoxide component and a styrene/ butadiene/methylmethacrylate latex modifier for an emulsion-based polyamide hardener component. Carboxy-terminated copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile (CTBN) can be incorporated into the epoxy resin through a simple esterification reaction.
