Bushing test

It is the purpose of this paper to review available plastic ww tests and to comment on their applicability to various tribosystems and to improve the comfort level that users can have that iheir plastic wear tests are producing valid material comparisons. The objective is to supply potential plastic users with gui Iines for the selection of appropriate wear tests for various industrial situations. We will start with a discussion of PV measurement, then wear factors, abrasivity testing, abrasion of plastics by other surfaces, plastic bushings, tests on plastic films, and erosion tests. These tests will be put into a selection matrix for plastic users. 

As an example in estimating wear rate in a nylon bushing consider a 10-rnm diameter shaft miming 900 rpm (0.47 m/s) under 0.5 x 10 N/m (70 psi) load. The P/ of 0.235 X 10 N/m -m/s(6510 psi-fpm) and if = 0.24 x 10 m /N for filled nylon in Table 9 gives a wear rate of 0.20 mm/1000 h. Since Pp test results vary widely, these wear estimates are only guides. For maximum utiHty, the test materials, finishes, temperature, load, speed, and lubrication should dupHcate as nearly as possible those in the planned appHcation. 

This test is applicable to all outdoor metal-enclosed switchgear and controlgear assemblies, as in lEC 60298, lEC 60694 and ANSI C-37/20C. The enclosure to be tested should be complete in all respects including its mounts, bushings (for HT switchgear assemblies, 1 kV and above) and wiring. One or more vertical units can be tested simultaneously as may be convenient, but not more than 3 m panel width can be tested at a time. For a multiple unit switchboard, however, at least two vertical units should be tested together to check the joints between the units. 

The flavonoid content of honey has also been frequently investigated by HPLC. However, it is not common practice to test rubber in this manner except as a low temperature test (see Chapter 15) when a strip test piece is twisted by means of a torsion wire. The instrument traditionally used is not really accurate enough for precise measurement of modulus at room temperature but it would seem reasonable to suppose that an accurate instrument could be devised.
