In addition to George s acclaimed work with locomotives, he and his son Robert designed numerous contraptions such as a scarecrow with wind-aided arms, a sundial, an oil light that burned underwater, and an automatic cradle rocker. While George... [Pg.1088]

By the care of my zealous assistant, Mr. W.C. Roberts, the hydrogen employed in these experiments was purified to the highest degree by passing it in succession through alcohol, water, caustic potash, and tubes of 0.7 meter each, filled with broken glass impregnated with nitrate of lead, sulphate of silver, and oil of vitriol. The gas was inodorous, and burned with a barely visible flame. ... [Pg.8]

One of the great accomplishments in this field is represented by the work of Robert Burns Woodward in his elucidation of the structure of the quinine molecule in 1944. Quinine was, for centuries, the most important drug available for the treatment of malaria, a disease that affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. As a result of Woodward s work, it became possible to manufacture the drug synthetically rather than to collect it from its natural source, chinchona bark. [Pg.26]

Influenza develops in approximately 20% of the global population each year. The 1918 influenza killed 50 million people worldwide, when an avian flu was passed on to humans. Chemistry genius Robert Burns Woodward lost his father to the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic when he was only two years old. The Asian influenza occurred in... [Pg.95]

There have been three randomized clinical trials and multiple case reports and open-label trials with the tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) in PTSD, although only one study of childhood PTSD (Southwick et al., 1994) has been reported. Robert et al. (1999) reported the use of low-dose imipramine (1 mg/kg) to treat symptoms of ASD in children with burn injuries. In this study, 25 children ages 2 to 19 years were randomized to receive either chloral hydrate or imipramine for 7 days. Ten of 12 subjects receiving imipramine experienced from half to full remission of ASD symptoms, whereas 5 of 13 subjects responded to chloral hydrate. Sleep-related flashbacks and insomnia appeared to be particularly responsive to treatment. [Pg.587]

Robert Boyle stated in 1661, in his Sceptical Chymist, drat sal ammoniac is composed of muriatic (hydrochloric) acid and the volatile alkali (ammonia) and told how to separate the urinous and common salts (27). In 1716 Geoffroy the Younger demonstrated the composition of sal ammoniac and prepared it by sublimation (28, 29). In the same year, the Jesuit missionary Father Sicard described its preparation at Dam ire or Damayer, one mile from die City of El Mansura in the Nile Delta. In twenty-five large laboratories and several smaller ones, it was sublimed in glass vessels from die soot of die burned dung of camels and cows, to which, he said, had been added salt and urine. Lemere, the French consul at Cairo, described die process in 1719 for the Academy of Sciences in Paris, but made no mention of salt or urine (29, 30, 31). [Pg.188]
