Alternatively, a fiber optic bundle can be used in place of the pipe. In a fiber optic bundle, a matrix of smaU (50—100 -lm) fiber optic strands are arranged such that the ordering of the strands at one end is equivalent to that on the other end. Therefore an image focused on one end with lenses is transmitted to the other end. Light is typicaUy sent down some of the fibers not used for image transmission to provide illumination. 

HoUow fibers are usuaUy on the order of 25 p.m to 2 mm in diameter. They can be made with a homogeneous dense stmcture, or preferably with a microporous stmcture having a dense permselective layer on the outside or inside surface. Prior to deposition on a moving belt or screen, the molten polymer threads from a spinnerette must be attenuated to orient the molecular chains of the fibers in order to increase fiber strength and decrease extendibiUty. This is accompHshed by hauling the plastic fibers off immediately after they have exited the spinnerette. In practice this is done by accelerating the fibers either mechanically (18) or pneumatically (17,19,20). In most processes, the fibers are pneumatically accelerated in multiple filament bundles however, other arrangements have been described wherein a linearly aligned row(s) of individual filaments is pneumatically accelerated (21,22).

Air cooled heat exchangers are used to transfer heat from a process fluid to ambient air. The process fluid is contained within heat eonducting tubes. Atmospherie air, whieh serves as the eoolant, is caused to flow perpendicularly across the tubes in order to remove heat. In a typical air cooled heat exchanger, the ambient air is either forced or induced by a fan or fans to flow vertically across a horizontal section of tubes. For condensing applications, the bundle may be sloped or vertical. Similarly, for relatively small air cooled heat exchangers, the air flow may be horizontal across vertical tube bundles. 

In order to improve the heat transfer characteristics of air cooled exchangers, the tubes are provided with external fins. These fins can result in a substantial increase in heat transfer surface. Parameters such as bundle length, width and number of tube rows vary with the particular application as well as the particular finned tube design. 

We will discuss below the reeent experimental observations relative to the eleetrieal resistivity and magnetoresistance of individual and bundles of MWCNTs. It is interesting to note however that the ideal transport experiment, i.e., a measurement on a well eharacterised SWCNT at the atomic scale, though this is nowadays within reaeh. Nonetheless, with time the measurements performed tended gradually eloser to these ideal eonditions. Indeed, in order to interpret quantitatively the eleetronie properties of CNTs, one must eombine theoretieal studies with the synthesis of well defined samples, which structural parameters have been precisely determined, and direet electrical measurements on the same sample. 

It is important to construct aligned CNT arrays in order to measure properties of individual tubes and to advance the development of electrical and/or electronic devices. From this viewpoint recent developments concerning CNT preparations involve the creation of aligned CNT bundles.
