This study was reported with another set of experiments that confirmed the growth of fibroblasts in connection with an experimental bum dressing. " While our work was positive enough to warrant further research, a technical problem prevented continued work. While we felt the surface chemistry was a necessary component of a successful artificial liver, it was not sufficient. In order to build a successful device, fluids must be able to enter and exit the environment freely. We discussed the differences in structure between open-celled polyurethanes and reticulated foam earlier. [Pg.145]

Watei oluble ointments include mixtures of mac-rogols and polyethylene glycols their consistency can be varied readily. They are easily washed off and are used in bum dressings, as lubricants and as vehicles that readily allow passage of dmgs into the skin, e.g. hydrocortisone. [Pg.301]

Silicone elastomers have a long history of use in the medical field. They have been applied to cannulas, catheters, drainage tubes, balloon catheters, finger and toe joints, pacemaker lead wire insulation, components of artificial heart valves, breast implants, intraocular lenses, contraceptive devices, bum dressings and a variety of associated medical devices. A silicone reference material has been made available by the National Institutes of Health to equate the blood compatibility of different surfaces for vascular applications. This material is available as a silica-free sheet. Contact the Artificial Heart Program, NHBLI, NIH, Bethesda, Md. for further information. [Pg.319]

Since a bum dressing has to be multifunctional, i.e., antimicrobial, highly absorbent, moist, and non-adherent, and since Silvadene and silver nitrate are used on bum patients for their antimicrobial property, we studied silver nitrate retention at 100 F. Table VI1 shows silver nitrate retained on CM samples subsequent to drying at 100 ° F. Again, the data indicate possible suitability of CM samples for moist healing as well as for treating a bum patient whose immune system may be compromised. (No bum patients have actually used this dressing). [Pg.122]
