Buildup effective levels

Additive packages have been developed which do an exceUent job of preventing IVD. The key to effective operation is to keep the valve wet so that the additive can prevent deposit buildup. Most packages include a combination of detergent/dispersant and a carrier oil or heavy solvent. If no carrier oil is present, then the fuel may evaporate off the valve too rapidly for the package to be effective. When the valves do not rotate, the portion of the valve which has the highest deposit level is the back side which is not constantly wet. [Pg.187]

There are two general weaknesses associated with capacitance systems. First, because it is dependent on a process medium with a stable dielectric, variations in the dielectric can cause instabiUty in the system. Simple alarm appHcations can be caUbrated to negate this effect by cahbrating for the lowest possible dielectric. Multipoint and continuous output appHcations, however, can be drastically affected. This is particularly tme if the dielectric value is less than 10. Secondly, buildup of conductive media on the probe can cause the system to read a higher level than is present. Sodium C rbon te. Sodium carbonate softens water by forming insoluble calcium carbonate with calcium ions in hard water. Carbonate can also reduce calcium levels by ion pairing, although the benefit to detergency is questionable. Buildup of calcium carbonate on machine and fabrics, which can occur with time, is undesirable. Sodium carbonate [497-19-8] does not provide any suspending action. The mechanics of deposition in a boiler are often a cycle of cause and effect, wherein an initial low level of scale deposited on boiler surfaces causes a rapid localized rise in wall temperature. The temperature increase leads to localized steam blanketing, which in turn prevents the deposit from resolubilizing. The buildup of biofilm on the membrane surface means an additional resistance to solvent flow as well as the possibility of enhancement of CP level by the biofilm, which is similar to the case of colloidal fouling [32,36], In general, the diffusivity is linked to the tortuosity factor of the biofilm [37]. Hence, it is likely that the backdiffusion of solutes in the biofilm on RO is hindered. The enhanced CP is important for two reasons. Firstly, the elevated concentration of solutes at the membrane wall means an increase in the osmotic pressure (CEOP) and hence a loss in the effective TMP. Secondly, the nutrient level is also enhanced and this will further accelerate the growth of the biofilm [32,36]. So, biofouling in RO becomes an interplay between C P and biofilm development. [Pg.133]
