Building Automation

Today occupants, building owners, and other end users of ventilation systems are more interested in the level of air quality and thermal climate than in the techniques by which that level is achieved. This is supported by the fact that industrial ventilation system.s in modern premises are more complicated and tightly integrated with the process and building automation. It is therefore difficult for end users or nonprofessionals to evaluate whether a ventilation system is functioning correctly. 

When local or central computers are used for controlling the operation of HVAC installations in buildings, they are described as building automation systems. In the control station, operators communicate with control installations, which are connected through the computer plant. Computers for individual use are called personal computers (PCs). The use of PCs for technical and economic tasks in the past few years has increased considerably. The business overflows with PCs, which get greater data power and memory at lower prices.

A recent data communications protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks (BACnet), ASHRAE Standard 135-1995, is an important step to ensure that controllers made by different manufacturers can communicate with each other in a simple way, avoiding the expense of additional interface hardware and communication software. 

Starting in the 1950s, electrochemical principles have been employed in the development of new technical means for the acquisihon, measurement, storage, transformation, and transfer of various types of informahon. By now many electrochemical devices have been developed for such purposes and are used to build automated systems for the control of production processes, for the automation of geophysical observations and measurements, and for many other purposes. This field, intermediate between electrochemistry, informatics, and electronics, is also known as chemotronics.

Another product area appeared in the 1980s called building automation systems (BAS). These systems included historical data, trend logging and fire and security functions in addition to conventional energy management functions. 

Modern Building Automation Systems (BAS) attempt to limit the interfaces used in order to provide a more seamless, integrated network. Ideally, all of the various components communicate with each other in a common language.
